A style of architecture that was prominent during the high and late Medieval Period. Originated in 12th Century France and lasted into the 16th Century First called “The French Style” and later called “Gothic” as a stylistic insult Usually found in religious buildings such as Cathedrals

Gothic Architecture The pointed arch is also called an “ogival” arch. Characteristic features: THE POINTED ARCH

A series of vaults to create a desired visual effect

The Ogive consists of the intersection of two or three barrel vaults

There is a vault across a space going to a buttress outside the building This allows the load carrying wall to have such things as stain glass windows

The either real or proportional characteristic of height was important in Gothic Architecture When one’s eye follows the length of a tower or spire it was thought to be bringing your eyes towards heaven

A series of Gothic Revival style architecture began in the mid 18th Century It spread throughout Europe and then to North America after colonization

11 Gothic Revival Gothic Architecture
We see it today in prominent buildings, religious buildings (Christ Church Cathedral) and some of the characteristics in homes.
