Chapters 4-6 The living conditions at Mrs. Jukneines boarding house are terrible, and the family decides to buy a house. The house is 2 miles from the packinghouse, which means the family has to pay to take the trolley to work every day. A neighbor tells them the history of the house, and explains about paying interest to the bank. The family realizes that they will have to pay much more than they first believed. Ona and one of the children, Stanislovas, find jobs to help pay for all the unexpected expenses.

Chapter 7 The flashback ends, and we catch up with Jurgis and Ona after their wedding. They are in a lot of debt. They experience their first Chicago winter. They cannot afford coal for a heater or money for the trolley to work. Antanas gets very sick.

Chapter 8 Marija falls in love with a neighbor who works in a factory by day and plays violin all night They dream about getting married, starting a family, and finding happiness in Packingtown Jurgiss job gets harder; he joins a workers union in the hopes of bettering his situation

Chapter 9 Jurgis begins studying English and learning about Democracy Jurgis learns about the terrible diseases and health problems that factory workers have (p )

Chapter 10 The long, hard winter ends, but spring brings new and unexpected problems. Marija gets a new, and more difficult, job. Ona becomes pregnant, and gives birth to a baby boy. They name him Antanas in memory of Jurgiss father.

Chapter 11 The family opens its first bank account. Shortly after that, there is a run on the bank and Jurgis and Ona nearly loose all their money. Jurgis has an accident at work and hurts his ankle. He cannot walk and must stay home from work.

Chapter 12 Jurgis is unable to work for 3 weeks after his injury. Jurgis cannot find a new job. Stanislovas gets caught in a snowstorm on his way home from work, and two of his fingers get stuck together. He developed a fear of the snow, and Jurgis beats him every day.

Chapter 13 Teta Elzbietas son dies. Jurgis gets a job in a fertilizer factory – one of the most disgusting jobs in Packingtown. Page 154: To this part of the yards came all the tankage, and the waste products of all sorts; here they dried out the bones…breathing their lungs full of the fine dust, and doomed to die every one of them.

Chapter 14 We learn about Elzbietas new job making the disgusting sausages from spoiled meat. Jurgis is miserable working at the fertilizer factory. He nearly gives up hope. He begins drinking alcohol. Onas behavior changes. She sometimes stays out all night without telling anyone where she is. She is nervous and cries a lot.

Focus: Chapters 10 & 14 Half the class will read chapter 10. The other half will read chapter 14. Read your assigned chapter with a partner. While you read, look for evidence of the seven themes of Modernism. Make note of examples and evidence for as many themes as you can find. Prepare to share your evidence with a partner who read a different chapter.

Chapter 15 Jurgis confronts Ona about staying out all night, and discovers a terrible secret. Ona has been working as a prostitute, because her supervisor Connor is threatening to fire her if she does not. Jurgis confronts Connor and gets in trouble with the police.
