The jungle
The jungle focuses a Lithuanian family that comes to America to pursue the American Dream. The two get married, after the reception they have a hefty debt to settle, but no money to pay it off. The husband Jurgis, goes out & gets a job, along with many of the other family members get jobs. After purchasing a home they find a lot of hidden cost in the contract. The wife, Oha, gets a job. Soon after Jurgis gets a job he dies. After hard winters in the slaughter house Oha is raped & impregnated by her boss. She died during labor.

His description of diseased, rotten, and contaminated meat shocked the public and led to new federal food safety laws.

Meat packing changes
During the 1930s, trade union-organized drives led by the newly-created Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) began to organize workers across different industries, including meat packing.
Over the next 40 years, unions such as the United Packinghouse Workers of America (UPWA) were able to improve both the pay and working conditions of meat packing employees in the U.S.
