Aim: How did geography affect the development of early Chinese Civilization? Do Now !!!: Complete handout “The Geography of China?”

Video Exercise You will watch the video clip “The Geography of China.” While watching the video clip you will: 1) write down the geographic features discussed in the film clip 2) evaluate what effect these features might have on the people of China

Class work In pairs, students will complete the “Han Lee’s Restaurant” exercise. Students will take turns reading each “dish” on the menu. Using the map provided, students will find where the ingredients for the dish would be found in China.

Aim: How did certain beliefs shape Chinese culture and traditions? Do Now: Please finish copying notes and important vocabulary on China’s Geography (next two slides)

Economic Because of China’s isolation by natural barriers, early settlers had to supply their own goods within China Not much trade outside of China

Social Society was sharply divided between nobles and peasants Family was central to society Had arranged marriages Group was more important than the individual

Intellectual Shang Dynasty was the first to leave written records Oracle Bones: animal bone or tortoise shells where priests scratched questions for gods then applied heat until it cracked. Then they priests interpreted the cracks

Intellectual No connection between written and spoken Chinese –Advantage: Someone can read Chinese without knowing how to speak it
