Coherence  In coherent writing, sentences fit together and flow in a logical and clear way. The ideas tie together smoothly and clearly, and readers can easily follow along

Factors of Coherent Writing  Appropriate paragraph breaks  Appropriate transitions  Sentence variety  Concise and precise language  Appropriate verb form

Paragraphs  Tell the reader when a new point or new information is presented. Each paragraph should tell the reader something new and important.  Indent to begin new paragraphs…  At the beginning of a story  Changing topic  Making a new point  When the speaker changes  When the place changes  When time changes

Sentence Variety  Readers become board with words and sentences that never vary  Avoid short, choppy sentences in which the same pattern is repeated.  There are five ways to avoid choppy sentences: 1. Use commas 2. Use conjunctions 3. Use relative clauses 4. Use participles 5. Use subordinate clauses

Precise Language  Use specific words  Avoid using terms such as “nice.” “good,” or “thing. They make the writing dry and uninteresting.  Example: The man is good.  ** How is the man good? Is he compassionate? Is he generous? Is he equitable?
