What is a Molecular Compound? A molecular compound is when two elements, usually non-metals, combine. Non-metal + non-metal = molecular compound.

Naming Molecular Compounds Nonmetal + Nonmetal molecules

The Greek Prefix Method Elements are given prefixes to tell how many atoms are present in the compound. 1 – mono 2 – di 3 – tri 4 – tetra 5 – penta 6 – hexa 7 – hepta 8 – octa 9 – nona 10 – deca

The Greek Prefix Method The first element is given a prefix ONLY if there is more than one atom of the element. (Do not use mono) The second element is ALWAYS given a prefix, and ends in –ide.

Examples: CO 2 carbon dioxide S2OS2O disulfur monoxide N2O5N2O5 dinitrogen pentoxide ClF 7 chlorine heptafluoride

The Stock System (Roman Numerals) The first element is given a roman numeral to tell the charge. The second element ends in – ide.

Examples: CO 2 carbon (IV) oxide S2OS2O sulfur (I) oxide N2O5N2O5 nitrogen (V) oxide ClF 7 chlorine (VII) fluoride
