The results of the survey of training needs in Turkey:(RET) Project Valence meeting 1

2 Survey Information  Sent to 50 different people (received 35 surveys)  Average age of 32  Various backgrounds: engineers, academicians, industry representatives and etc.

Survey Results 1.1 Are you familiar with the main renewable energy technologies? Please evaluate your knowledge: Solar energy: thermal (DHW, heating and refreshing systems) : photovoltaic (small scale installations <3kwc) Reply: Scale changing from 7 to 10 3

Survey Results 1.1 Are you familiar with the main renewable energy technologies? Please evaluate your knowledge: Heat pumps Reply: air-air and air-water ones which were marked by 20 surveyors they gave scales from 9 to 10. 4

Survey Results 1.2 What do you know about small scale geothermal energy system adapted to individual buildings ? water-air (phreatic water) : water-water (phreatic table) : geothermal-energy (deep groundwater boreholes) : Reply: high scores were given to this question 5

Survey Results 1.3 What other kind of renewable energy do you known? (if necessary, precise it). □ Biomass □ Energy Air Recovery □ Heat recovery on waste water, computer room □ Hydraulic systems □ Others Reply: biomass, energy recovery, heat recovery, hydraulic systems, energy storage and biogas are the subjects that our surveyors are familiar with. 6

Survey Results 1.4 Are you familiar with the national regulations and standards in your country concerning renewable energy techniques ? Reply: 10 of our surveyors replied to the question about the legislations in Turkey with various legislation names such as law no: TS 825, 5627,

Survey Results 1.5 Do you know which kind of renewable-energy equipments and brands are available in your country? Reply: Topkapı Group, MT Energie, Proval, Doruk Endustri, İzaydaş, Dolandson, GE, Deutz, Aytemiz Co., Zorlu Co., Turkerler Co., Vaillant Co., Buderus Co, Solar Turk and some products gas engine, valves, gas turbines, chillers, wind turbines, solar panels, electrical cabinets, gear and transmission parts and etc. 8

Survey Results Sustainable development 2.1 Are you familiar with the main international goals concerning the sustainable development ? Reply: “this could be applicable to all countries while taking into account different national realities, capacities and levels of development with the help of national policies and regulations”. Other answers are mainly concentrating on poverty of the nations, economic wealth of a country and some economic crisis mainly. 9

Survey Results 2.2 Do you know how sustainable development is promoted in your country? Reply: research and development budget should be increased, renewable energy should be exploited, education about renewable energy at universities should be increased. 10

Survey Results 2.3 Which are the main problems and questions about sustainable development in your country? Reply: “problem at energy consumption in built environments”, “there is not enough promotion and people have not enough information about sustainable development issue. Another well written reply was “one of the big items for the upcoming years is the question of energy consumption and the need to lower primary energy use. One of the biggest energy consumers in the building and construction sector agreed to cut down these energy consumptions.” 11

Survey Results 2.4 Are you familiar with the main questions on energy efficiency in buildings and construction ? □ Exterior Insulation/Interior insulation □ HVAC □ Air tightness □ Numerical model for thermal calculation Reply: Familiarity with the energy efficiency in buildings and construction was mainly concentrated on Exterior Insulation/Interior insulation and HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air conditioning) system optimisation. The reason for this, in Turkey quite recently, insulation has a great importance and receives governmental promotion as there is a legislation about it. All surveyors marked insulation. 12

Survey Results 2.5 Do you know the international or national rules, standards and labels concerning energy consumption of buildings and constructions ? □ low energy buildings □ passive house □ green buildings □ Others Reply: low energy consumption buildings and green buildings. Although green buildings are a new topic to Turkish market, some surveyors have marked this option with low energy buildings. 13

Survey Results Sustainable construction 3.1 Are you familiar with solutions and technics to lower energy consumption of buildings? If yes, which ones do you know best? Reply: after the coming of natural gas to our city in most buildings exterior insulation have been used to prevent heat loss in winter time. In Turkey water heating system of 7 million m2 area has been installed on the roofs of buildings to meet hot water need without using electricity. Properly orienting the building on its location according to sun position is another solution to decrease energy needs for lighting the buildings. Heat pumps and solar systems can be utilised as well. Insulating the walls and windows, using thermostatic valves will decrease the energy consumption, too. 14

Survey Results Sustainable construction 3.2 Do you need informations about new building materials and technical systems ? Materials : □ bio-ressourced materials technical systems : □ insulation, □ air renewal, □ air-tightness Reply: insulation, air renewal, air tightness and bio-resourced materials were marked by surveyors information requires on these issues 15

Survey Results Sustainable construction 3.3 Do you know which kind of materials for sustainable construction are available in your country? Reply: Heat pumps, photovoltaic, wind turbines, insulating materials and window glasses 16

Survey Results Sustainable construction 3.4 Are you familiar with the main building construction techniques used in your country ? For private houses (PH) and/or public buildings (PB): If possible, precise it. Structural building systems : Concrete, Brick, Wood, Steel, Stone, Fibres Reply: Construction industry is one of the best developed industries, all kinds of construction techniques are well known in Turkey. In that sense, surveyors replied to Question 3.4 by marking all of the options together. 17

Survey Results Additional topics 4.1 Which special technical items you want to be treated in the trainings (In accordance to the main project items) : 4.2 Which kind of additional questions do you want to be treated in the sustainable construction training module or in an other field : Reply: Natural air-conditioning, wind energy, solar energy, energy efficiency, fermentation process and small wind mills 18
