Welcome to Lakeland! RDG 050 My Name: Howard Taylor My Office: Tables in front of Rooms 105 & 107. I could meet in the adjunct instructors computer lab if we need to. Ask for conferences before or after class. I look forward to working with you in developing your reading to the best level you have ever had. That is my goal. I hope you share it with me.

About Me My career has been varying. I have taught art, was librarian at Cowden- Herrick, Gifted Instructor at Charleston, Grant Writer, Technology Coordinator, Network/Computer Administrator, and my favorite job: Reading Teacher at Cowden- Herrick.

I have written three books: Coles County News: the Gatherers and Reporting in the old daysColes County News: the Gatherers and Reporting in the old days When the Gong Rings: History of the Charleston Fire Department, When the Gong Rings: History of the Charleston Fire Department, Learning Lincoln OnlineLearning Lincoln Online

My Website Over the years I have developed a large website entitled By the Light of the Fire, honoring and about President Abraham Lincoln. The site has been home for my various lessons in Gifted Ed. while at Charleston, has my entire Lincoln book on-line by subject. I have a special location on it for my Lake Land reading classes. Check this out at: Our reading classes resources are located at this page:

My Website Resources Included on my web pages for my reading classes will be All Power Points used in class Pdf copies of all worksheets and handouts Special announcements Other items to be included as the semester flows by The URL for my Reading pages is:

Lakeland Resources Welcome to Lake Land College guide to success: a resource book and personal calendar, Go to the Student Center (where the Subway restaurant is located) and pick up a copy. IRIS online connections for each student from the Lakeland Website:

Weekly Calendar The really nice Welcome to Lake Land College personal guide and calendar will be great for you to write down assignments, special days, due-dates, and to record your Plato Computer times.

Two Novels In Lakeland Reading Classes, you will be required to read two novels In Rdg 050 you will need to obtain copies of: Abraham Lincoln, A photographic story of a life by Tanya Lee Stone (ISBN: jpbc) Have a copy by (Sept. 13) The Secret Life of Bees, a novel by Sue Monk Kidd (ISBN: pbk) Have a copy by midterm

Getting the Novels The titles are older books, and can be obtained by ordering through Lakeland Library or your own hometown public library. You will get them from the libraries for the length of time they allow. You are usually allowed to renew. You can purchase a new copy from Waldenbooks or Borders at a discount if you have a Borders card (are free). Waldenbooks is in the mall at Mattoon. Borders is located on Prospect Ave., Champaign. You can purchase new or used copies very cheap through Amazon.com or Borders.com, or other source. A shipping charge makes them a bit higher.

Novels Needed It is very important that you get the first novel ordered quickly, in order to be able to take part in novel activities, which will be a major part of your grade. Have the first book in-hand by Sept. 13 (Friday) The second book will be needed right after midterm, which will be Nov. 12. Order the book at least one full week before Nov. 12

The Syllabus We will now leave Power Point and I will go through the points of the Rdg 050 Syllabus. I will give you a paper copy as soon as my address is available.
