ANDS Back to Basics Workshop Research Data Management and the ECU Library Poh Lin Teow & Gordon McIntyre Librarians: Research Services Bentley Technology Park Function Centre, April 29 th, 2015

RDM and the ECU Library: An Historical Background RDM Project ECU’s Seeding the Commons Project Assigned Senior Librarian as Research Data Librarian Aims Review existing ECU RDM practices in strategic areas and raise awareness Development of dataset metadata records on Research Data Australia Outcomes 38 Researchers interviewed 15 datasets described on RDA ECU stakeholders’ needs identified for the development of a RDM Policy

RDM and the ECU Library: 2012 Library’s role and collaboration Research Data Librarian’s role continued Collaboration started with Office of Research and Innovation – Collaborative Research Network and eResearch Focus More research data interviews held with researchers Gathered further information to inform further development of RDM policies and guidelines Outcomes ECU Library Research Data Management Toolkit developed Establishment of the Library Research Services Team to support RDM activities

RDM and the ECU Library: Library’s role and collaboration ECU RDM Policy approved. RDM Plan template included as an Appendix. (latest rev. Jan 2014) RDM Policy rolled out to Category 1 researchers from May 2014, coordinated by ORI’s eResearch team. Library is involved in researcher interviews Focus Library RS Team explored the possibility of storing dataset records on ECU’s institutional repository (Research Online) Explored metadata structure and mapping of RO record fields to RDA for automatic harvesting, developed demo site on Research Online Outcomes Identified non Category 1 researchers for RDM interviews RO dataset page went live in October. 18 datasets metadata from Seeding the Commons Project were recreated on Research Online

ANDS Open Data Project 2014/2015  Aims to facilitate sharing of institutionally generated datasets  Funding enough to facilitate full time commitment of 2 L6 Librarians to Library RDM activities for 9 weeks beginning September 2014  Project has been an educational experience for both the researchers and the Librarians  Reviewed and updated existing Library’s RDM resources – toolkit, metadata templates, templates  Developed marketing materials for meetings with researchers  Many issues that researchers face in sharing data were identified  Library has an important role in trying to turn these issues into opportunities for making changes within ECU that will make it easier for researchers to share their data in the future

I can’t share my data because …. Statement to destroy research data in Ethics Committee Application Meeting with the Research Ethics Office – clarify expectations Changes made to the Online Research Ethics System

I can’t share my data because …. The data I have is very sensitive. I have third party agreement on how I can use the data Provide a copy of ANDS guide to Publishing and Sharing Sensitive Data Raised awareness and redirect focus to how to prepare data for sharing instead

I can’t share my data because …. I spent a lot of time collecting the data. It’s MINE!!! Shared benefits of data sharing and expectations from NHMRC, ARC, Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and ANDS Open Research Data Report Redirect focus to sharing work legacy and potential collaboration opportunities – “What if I die??? question”

We can’t share the data because …. HDR students leave with their data Reviewed HDR students’ RDM practices In progress – ORI/GRS/Library drafting guidelines on submission of research data upon graduation/exit process

Researchers workflows Making it easier for the Researcher – understanding their workflows The RS Team was involved in the ECU- wide research business process mapping activity Provided input on research information workflows and established library’s role and needs in RDM processes

Understanding systems Information on research activities is everywhere within different ECU systems Meeting with colleagues managing Records and Archives system, Research Management System, Research Activity System Able to access to information on past research projects & research grants

Published datasets Identify published articles that have datasets attached Update RO configurations to showcase these datasets via Research Online dataset page Publications from PLOS, Nature, etc are now listed on the ECU dataset page
