UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG LIBRARY, ERESEARCH AND THE ANDS SEEDING THE COMMONS PROJECT University of Sydney Forum Presenter: Carolyn Norris Friday 30 th September 2011 Project Manager: Matthew Perry eResearch Project Officer: Carolyn Norris eResearch Analyst: Elaine Gully (Intersect) University Librarian: Margie Jantti

Feedback “This is great! Nice to be working in the digital research age.” “This is cool! Want to do the rest now?” From two Science academics after seeing their collections described in Research Data Australia

Background and Promotion Project commenced August 2010 DataWise Project Seeding the Commons Project Championed by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) Deans and Faculty Research Chair Meetings Faculty Meetings Emails to individual researchers Phone calls to individual researchers Individual researcher appointments to record metadata Project Registration Data MGMT Guidelines Data Management Plans Seeding the Commons Archiving & tagging Storage

Interviews & Metadata Interview Metadata template (sent with meeting confirmation email) 2 people at interviews Services of ANDS and UOW Metadata FileMaker Pro (Temporary solution) ANDS Sandbox Production Research Data Australia

Metadata Sources Reasons for Unavailability

Transfer of knowledge at Library All Library Meeting Strategic Planning Quality Assurance Committee Outreach Librarians Report to Library Executive Committee on the outcomes of the UOW ANDS Seeding the Commons Project with implications for the Library

Some key learnings that may interest you Some researchers indicated that they would only share research data if they were mandated to do so Sharing of research data needs to be promoted as a benefit to the researcher. Providing enticements is advantageous Many researchers do not have their data stored in secure environments and are interested in free secure central storage Researchers who have already made their data available through another source often do not see the value in making the same data discoverable through Research Data Australia Many Science researchers indicated that it was compulsory to supply data to the publisher when submitting the article and that the data is protected by the same copyright as the article

Progress since the end of the Seeding the Commons Project DVC(R) has given approval for DataWise to continue Draft Research Data Management Policy has been endorsed by the Academic Senate and available for feedback Draft Research Data Management Guidelines are on the eResearch website inviting feedback ITS created the position of Senior Manager, Academic Computing, who is responsible for the co-ordination of research data management at the University Academic Outreach Program has commenced and is emphasising the value of good data management practices Metadata is still being collected and loaded to Research Data Australia The demand for a Research Data Librarian is being assessed Responsibilities for eResearch and the eResearch website remain with Research Services

Where to from here? Continue our efforts to change the culture regarding the sharing of research data Ratification of the Research Data Management Policy Clear definition of research data management responsibilities at UOW Training program implemented at the Library Identification of funding Retain the momentum from the Seeding the Commons to promote the value of good research data management practices at UOW
