Furniture Arrangement

What’s Wrong….

What’s Wrong???

Furniture Arrangement: Living/Family Room What ACTIVITIES commonly take place in a living room/family room??? What type of furniture would you want in a family room? The ideal diameter for the primary conversation area: 8-12 feet Secondary furniture grouping: Seating for 2-3 people, a piano, a desk or a chair for one person

Furniture Arrangement: Dining Room/EIK’s What ACTIVITIES take place in dining rooms/eat-in kitchens? Watch your spacing of furniture!!!! Extra Info if curious: Minimum dining size for four people. 80 square feet Space required to seat four to eight people and place a hutch and buffet in the room: 180 square feet

Furniture Arrangement Three types of space that should be provided for each person in a bedroom: Sleeping, storage, dressing Space that should be left on each side of a bed: 22 inches Exception: Twin beds can be made from one side

Furniture Arrangement Recommended clearance space in front of a closet: 33 inches Dressing circle: 42 inches

Furniture Arrangement: What do you need to consider when arranging furniture??? Function: How a space will be used. Dictates the selection and arrangement of furniture. How can you combine functions with furniture arrangement? Living and dining areas can be combined. Drop-leaf table can double as a sofa table. Bedroom can serve as an office, dressing room, reading room, etc.

Furniture Arrangement: What do you need to consider when arranging furniture??? Mechanical or architectural features and their function must be considered when placing furniture: Examples: Air circulation vents, doors, windows, electrical outlets, phone jacks, television cables or antenna lines, fireplaces, and stairs How to control flow of traffic: Place furniture at key locations to direct traffic flow or restrict or redirect traffic.

Furniture Arrangement: Goals… Create a feeling of balance in a room: Opposite walls should lend visual weight Furniture, doors, windows, and fireplaces should be balanced Visual mass is more important than dimensions Groupings should be balanced Do not overcrowd the room with furniture Use furniture to emphasize a focal point: Group furniture around a focal point If the room lacks a focal point, use a piece of furniture as a focal point Groupings for seating arrangements: Straight line, L-shaped, U-shaped, Box shaped, Parallel

Furniture Arrangement:

How do I know how much space I have??? Here are some tips/things you can do to determine how everything will fit in a space before actually purchasing or moving things around…

Floorplan & Arrangement Analysis: Choose one of your furniture arrangements on your floorplan that you feel is the best arrangement. Make it “pop.” Draw in traffic patterns. Is it still your best arrangement? Why is this your best arrangement? What did you do well? Is there still room for improvement? GET READY TO SHARE!!!!!
