PEARSON COMMON CORE LITERATURE GRADES 11 AND 12 (2015)

Focused around three main Common Core instructional shifts to get students college and career ready

1. Build content knowledge Meaning… read a range of complex literary and informational text (i.e. fiction and more nonfiction)

2. Construct written and oral responses Meaning… respond to prompts citing evidence from text

3. Interact independently with complex texts Meaning… read more on your own analyze and internalize (break apart and think about) text and vocabulary

Goal for students… Confident, independent and successful readers

How? Gradual Release Model I do We do You do Resources Interactive e-text version (highlight, make notes, bookmark) Close Reading tools (assist with critical thinking) Multimedia (videos, audio) Common Core aligned questions and assessments

Questions after each selection follow the same format… KEY IDEAS AND DETAILS -locate and cite specific information in the text and make inferences CRAFT AND STRUCTURE - analyze how an author structures text, look at how author uses language INTEGRATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND IDEAS - compare texts, analyze arguments in text, think critically about a text’s ideas

All units in the textbook center around key essential questions… 11 th Grade12 th Grade What makes American literature American? What is the relationship between literature and place? How does literature shape or reflect society? What is the relationship of the writer to tradition?

So… What types of texts will you read in this course? What is required when you respond to questions verbally or in writing? How will you read many of the texts in this course?
