The SYLLABUS Expectations What you bring to the class: The most important expectations in my class are that all students are treated with respect, that all ideas are considered, and that each student makes his or her best effort to make a meaningful contribution to the work of his or her own education. Optimized Individuals who – Attend classes regularly and punctually with all necessary materials. Research options and establish an educational plan for post-secondary training and education. Understand how to apply for, obtain, and maintain employment. Articulate Communicators who – Convey ideas through oral and written expression, using good organization, academic vocabulary, and correct grammar. Listen and read to understand and interpret concepts and ideas. Use a variety of tools, including technology, to research and present information. Real-Life Problem Solvers who – Consider, select, and apply strategies to find appropriate solutions. Identify, assess, and analyze information from a variety of sources to make informed decisions. He said that knowledge is power, “it is an acquired illumination, it is a habit, a personal possession, and an inward endowment…it is a treasure.” He said of education that it is, “an action upon our mental nature, and the formation of character; it is something individual and permanent.” This is what I want for my students: the power to become anything that you want in life, to be a person of strong character, and to see education as a treasure that will serve you well in all aspects of your life. Grade Information: 100%-90% A 89%-80% B 79%-70% C 69%-60% D Below 60% F Assignments that are late receive an automatic 10% deduction. After one full class day, they will not be accepted. No Exceptions! There will be homework. It is important that all homework is completed and turned in on the due date.

Supplies What You Need to Bring to Class: 3-Ring BinderTab Dividers Lined Paper 3-Ring Pencil PouchInk pens Pencils *For saving your computer work, it is strongly suggested you purchase a USB storage device/jump drive. *DO NOT use a spiral binder for your work in this class – use only a 3-Ring Binder with 3-hole punched paper. The Law Rules You Will Follow: Be in your seat and prepared to work when the bell rings. Bring all books and necessary materials to class. Save side conversations until after class. Follow directions the first time they are given. No personal grooming during class time. Respect Ms. Sherwood and your fellow classmates. We will follow these and all school rules in this classroom. Academic Expectations What Will Be Required of You: Vocabulary Each week, you will have a vocabulary quiz. Writing You will have regular writing assignments that go along with the stories that we will be reading. Discussion We will have class discussions; being involved in class discussion is an important part of the class, and a portion of your grade will be based on discussion and participation. Notes You will be responsible for keeping class notes and handouts in an organized folder. Folders/binders will be checked on a regular basis. Tests and Quizzes There will be announced (and unannounced) tests and quizzes throughout the year. Outside Reading You will be required to read as part of your homework. I can help you choose a book, or you can pick one on your own. You will complete a Dialectic Journal for your book and turn it in. Homework Homework is a vital learning tool and you will be required to complete assignments on a regular basis. Units of Study What You Will Be Learning: We will be following the California Reading/Language Arts Framework. It is a blueprint for organizing instruction so that every student meets or exceeds the Language Arts Content Standards. It is a research-based approach for implementing instruction to ensure optimal benefits for all students. California Language Arts Content Standards READING: 1.0 Word Analysis, Fluency, and Systematic Vocabulary Development 2.0 Reading Comprehension (Focus on Informational Materials) 3.0 Literary Response and Analysis WRITING: 1.0 Writing Strategies 2.0 Writing Applications (Genres and Their Characteristics) WRITTEN AND ORAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE CONVENTIONS LISTENING AND SPEAKING: 1.0 Listening and Speaking Strategies 2.0 Speaking Applications In the tenth grade, you continue to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the earlier grades, but in more refined and sophisticated ways.
