What is the Food Pyramid? The Food Pyramid tells us what we should or should not eat to help keep our bodies healthy! The 6 parts of the Food Pyramid are:  Grains Grains  Fruits Fruits  Vegetables Vegetables  Dairy Dairy  Protein Protein  Fats/Sweets Fats/Sweets

What Do the Colors Mean?  Grains = Orange  Vegetables = Green  Red = Fruit  Dairy = Blue  Purple = Protein

Grains  Grains can include breads, pasta, crackers, and rice.  Whole grains are better for you  Children should eat anywhere from 2.5 ounces to 5 ounces daily.  Grains give you energy to learn and play.

Fruits  There are a lot of fruits! Some examples are apples, grapes, bananas, oranges, and berries.  Children should eat around 1 ½ cups of fruit daily.  Fruits have vitamins and minerals that help the body fight off germs.

Vegetables  Corn, carrots, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, and peas are all vegetables.  You should eat about 1 ½ cups of vegetables a day  Vegetables help keep your body from getting sick. They also help your heart stay strong.

Dairy  Dairy can be found in yogurt, milk, cheese, and ice cream.  2 ½ cups is what you should be eating a day.  Dairy keeps your bones and teeth strong. It also helps keep your heart beating strong.

Protein  Some example of Proteins are fish, eggs, meat, some types of beans, and nuts.  Children should eat 4 ounces of protein a day!  Proteins help build healthy bones, muscles, skin, and bones.

Sugars/Fats  Sugars and fats are ‘sometimes treats.’ They can be eaten every once in a while, but eating a lot of sugars and fats won’t keep your body strong and healthy.  Examples of sugars and fats are cookies, cake, ice cream, donuts, and pizza.  These treats don’t have a lot of things that keep your body healthy.

Exercise  Exercising is a great way to keep your body strong and healthy.  Some activities you can do are:  Soccer  Basketball  Running  Riding a bike  Swimming  Swinging  Jump-roping

Assignment I am always looking for new way to eat healthy but I’m going to need your help! I want to know what your favorite foods are and why they are healthy. Here’s what your assignment will include.  Find a digital camera and take a picture of your healthy food. You will then show it to the class and explain to your classmates why it is so healthy.  Have an adult help you locate the recipe to your favorite healthy food and bring it to class. After I get your recipes back, I will make a cook book for you to take home.
