The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 3-4 March 2010 SMART FLEXRAY CONTROLLER 4 PICOBLAZE FLEXRAY ARCHITECTURE SMART FLEXRAY CONTROLLER

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 3-4 March 2010 A SMART FLEXRAY CONTROLLER BASED ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT(ECU) 5 CSP POC CHI MAC CODEC FSP Program Memory Host Processor Bus Driver To Flexray Bus Programming Interface I/O Interface Flexray Controller I/O interface PICOBLAZE +INTERFACE UNIT Flexray Communication Controller FEATURES o On the fly Programmable. o 1K of program memory. o Access to all Blocks of the Flexray Controller.

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 3-4 March 2010 APPLICATIONS o The applications most suited for the smart Flexray controller are: 1.Simple Applications: The ECU is generally used as simple control or a sensor node. Ex: Seat Control, Lighting Systems etc. 2.High End Applications: It involves multiple ECUs connected to a single powerful processor. Ex: Gateways, Diagnostic Unit etc. 6

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 3-4 March 2010 FLEXRAY BASED ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM(ABS) 7 Wheel Sensors for ABS ECU-1 ECU-4 ECU-3 ECU-2 ECU-5 ABS Control Unit Flexray bus Brake control ECU-2 ABS Control Unit

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 3-4 March 2010 FPGA BASED ON-BOARD MULTIFUNCTION SYSTEM 8 GPS Wi-Fi ABS ESP Display Transmission control Valve Timing S1 S5 S6 S2 S3 S4 S7 MOST to Flexray CAN to Flexray On Board Multi-Function System Infotainment Comfort Control Flexray Bus A Flexray Bus B Flexray Bus C Diagnostic/Safety Sensors FEATURES o Each PicoBlaze core acts as a co-processor. o Host processor distributes tasks to each controller. o PicoBlaze core analyzes, filters and process the received Flexray frames. o Host processor interrupted only when a crucial decision is to be taken

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 3-4 March 2010 KEY BENEFITS OF SMART FLEXRAY CONTROLLER o Facilitates quick decision o Reduce the time taken by the host processor in accessing the Flexray controller. o Better content filtering with programmable parameters. o Can work without a host processor in simple applications, hence reducing the overall cost. o Supports up to 1K of program memory allows a decent sized application. o Gives more flexibility to the designer. 9

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 3-4 March 2010 CONCLUSION o Vehicular networking will play a major role in the future automobile o As a vehicular networking protocol, Flexray will ease implementations like Steer by wire, Brake by wire in future automobiles o Open-source silicon will be to automobiles what open- source is to software. Boundaries will end, monopolies will cease. o Smart Flexray controllers will help in managing the data flow in a vast Flexray network and bringing down the cost per ECU 10
