4 Abstract OBJECTIVES OF THE Presentation: OBJECTIVES OF THE Presentation:  To know what is the electronic control unit.  To determine the primary functions of (ECU).  How does the ECU work.

5 Introduction  Electronic control unit (ECU) is a computer which controls (for instance) ignition and fuel injection systems. An electronic control unit (ECU), also called a control unit or control module that controls one or more of the electrical subsystems in a car. The simplest ECUs control only the quantity of fuel injected into each cylinder each engine cycle. The simplest ECUs control only the quantity of fuel injected into each cylinder each engine cycle. More advanced ECUs found on most modern cars also control the ignition timing, variable valve timing (VVT). 13 Control of fuel injection ECU will determine the quantity of fuel to inject based on a number of parameters. ECU will determine the quantity of fuel to inject based on a number of parameters. The ECU will inject more fuel according to how much air is passing into the engine which is controled by throttle pedal. The ECU will inject more fuel according to how much air is passing into the engine which is controled by throttle pedal. If the engine has not warmed up yet,the ECU will control the injection of fuel causing the engine to run slightly 'rich' until the engine warms up (choke). 15 Control of ignition timing ECU can adjust the exact timing of the spark (called ignition timing) to provide better power and economy. ECU can adjust the exact timing of the spark (called ignition timing) to provide better power and economy. If the ECU detects knock because the ignition timing is too early in the compression stroke, the ECU will delay the timing of the spark to prevent knock. 16 Control of variable valve timing the ECU controls the time in the engine cycle at which the valves open. the ECU controls the time in the engine cycle at which the valves open. The valves are usually opened later at higher speed than at lower speed,This can optimize the flow of air into the cylinder increasing power. 18 Programmable ECUs A special category of ECUs are those which are programmable. These units do not have a fixed behavior, but can be reprogrammed by the user.
