“Moving image… particularly appeals to those who favour a more visual style of learning.” British Film Institute (2003: 19) It uses auditory and visual learning styles: Benefits of using multimedia in education

Benefits of using multimedia in education? “Moving image work… stimulates and motivates both genders but without patronizing either” Andrew Goodwyn (2004: 146) Appeals to both boys and girls:

5-14 Multimedia Lessons Manipulate a photograph Plan and record a sound clip Plan and film a video clip Draw and scan in a drawing Write and type in headings and text Add all elements into a presentation

5-14 Multimedia Lessons Aliens have invaded your school! Create a news report with photos, video, sound clips and text to tell the world what has happened!

Task One: Photograph Manipulation Download a photo of the school Download a picture of an alien spacecraft In Appleworks Painting, lasso round the alien ship, then move the ship onto the photo Add special effects

Task Two: Record a Sound Clip Plan and record a sound clip of: A student’s eyewitness report An interview with an eyewitness An interview with an alien The aliens communicating their demands

Task Three: Film a Video Clip As a class plan, rehearse and film a video clip Prior learning – all second year students will have planned and made short films in Media Studies in first year

Other Tasks: Draw and scan in a drawing of an artist’s impression of the aliens Write and type in headings and a news report of the alien invasion Add all elements into a presentation

Attainment Targets Level D – Create a slide show / presentation or web pages using more sophisticated software and with teacher support. Incorporate, e.g.: –text –graphics –sound ICT ‘Creating and Presenting’ Multimedia manipulation strand: Level E – Create a presentation or web pages using more appropriate software. Working independently, incorporate, e.g.: –text –graphics –sound –video
