Presentation Introduction This presentation will discuss…  UDL Principle II. Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression  Checkpoint 5.1: Use multiple media for communication  “Key Considerations” for Checkpoint 5.1  Example for Checkpoint 5.1 -- VoiceThread  How VoiceThread Works  How this resource might be used effectively during instruction or assessment opportunities in our current classroom or our future practice.

UDL Principle II Action & Expression Provide Options for Responding  Using Keyboard instead of using pen or pencil.  Voice Recorder  Joy Stick  Eye movement recognition software Provide Options for Completing assignments using different Media  Speech  Film  Music  Text

Checkpoint 5.1: Use multiple media for communication  Provide alternative media for expression.  Alternatives reduce media-specific barriers to expression among learners with a variety of special needs.  Increases the opportunities for all learners to develop a wider range of expression in a media-rich world.

Using Media Examples  Compose in multiple media such as text, speech, drawing, illustration, design, film, music, dance/movement, visual art, sculpture or video  Use physical manipulatives (e.g., blocks, 3D models, base-ten blocks)  Use social media and interactive web tools (e.g., discussion forums, chats, web design, annotation tools, storyboards, comic strips, animation presentations)  Compose in multiple media such as text, speech, drawing, illustration, comics, storyboards, design, film, music, visual art, sculpture, or video  Solve problems using a variety of strategies

Checkpoint Key Considerations  How does this help learners meet the goal?  How does this account for the variability of all learners?  Are there multiple ways for learners to communicate what they know?

Checkpoint Resource Example VoiceThread “VoiceThread is audiovisual tool for sharing and commenting on images or video files. Upload an image or video, add a written or audio commentary, and share. Use VoiceThread in the classroom to comment on student work or discuss an image or video” (N.C.U.D.L, n.d.) Age Group: All ages Content Area: All areas Cost: Free Technology Involved: Internet connection Web Link: http://voicethread.c om/#home

VoiceThread Support for UDL  VoiceThread has embedded options for communication.  Comments can be expressed through writing, verbally, and/or with a drawing tool.

VoiceThread Classroom Application  As an educator, I could use VoiceThread to inspire and engage students by creating one on one online tutorials containing: video and graphic presentations with access to interactive supplemental materials that provide immediate feedback.  “Rather than using traditional forms of assessment such as written pencil and paper tests, our middle school ratio teacher might allow students to demonstrate learning through interviews or by creating representations and novel story problems. When teachers increase the number and variety of participation options and forms of assessment for students, both teachers and students benefit (The Access Center, n.d.).
