Professional Development Proposal Sarah Baker EDAD 5320 Monday, April 27, 2009

Overview Classroom Performance System is a wireless hardware/software system that provides teachers with instant feedback from all of their students. The Classroom Performance System consists of software, a wireless remote pad for each student, and an infrared receiver that connects to the teacher’s computer. After a teacher asks a question, students respond by pressing one of eight buttons on their pads. The software immediately tallies the students’ responses and summarizes the results.

Rationale A technology survey was distributed to the staff to determine the technology needs of the campus.technology survey Thirty-three people responded to the survey. Eleven people indicated that they wanted training using the CPS. The administration also directed me to develop a workshop since multiple sets had been purchased.

Research Tool allows all students the ability to participate in a whole group setting (Lindroth). CPS helps teachers indentify misconceptions quickly (Lightstone). Teachers report a higher rate of homework completion when they input their homework responses using the CPS response pads (Keeler). Students favor using the system and the system enhances classroom discussion (Blackman, Dooley, Kuchinski, Chapman).

Organization MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFriday 7:30-8:15 1 st Grade Kinder/Pre-K 4 th Grade5 th Grade3 rd Grade2 nd Grade Each grade level meets once a week for their Professional Learning Community (PLC meeting). The PLC time is part of the master schedule for our campus. I will plan on inviting each grade level to the conference room for the professional development.

Engage

Explore The teachers will take a 10 question quiz using a response pad. I plan on using this time to demonstrate some of system components.

Explain Each teacher will receive a document that gives them step-by-step directions.document Each grade-level will receive a bound copy of the CPS guide that is available on their product website. Each teacher was asked to bring a class roster with them. We will take time to get them started using the CPS.

Explain The following will be modeled: –Setting Up CPS –Creating Content in CPS –Engage

Elaborate Each teacher will receive a reflection form.reflection form They can use this form to write down ways that they can use this tool for their grade level.

Evaluate Each teacher will receive an evaluation form as they leave the training session.evaluation form I will ask for them to turn in the form to my box.

Follow-Up Using the feedback from the evaluation forms, I will see if there is further interest in doing an additional workshop. Administration will be asking for teachers to utilize the tool and include it on their lesson plans. I will let the teachers know that I am available for help. An will be sent one month after the professional development to see how the teachers are using the tools. Suggestions for implementation, tricks, tips, and ideas will be shared among the school community. Teachers that have found the tool really helpful will have the chance to briefly share their ideas during a faculty meeting.
