Introductions Matthew Hipps, high school science teacher, Gaston County Jacquline Ingram, 7 th grade math teacher, Cumberland County Schools Mario Torrence, 6 th grade math teacher, Sugar Creek Charter Julie Whittington, 8 th grade math teacher, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

Agenda Welcome to Exploring Math and Science with WebQuests. Here’s what we are covering in this presentation: What is a webquest? What are some science and math tools that can be used in a webquest? Independent Practice & Follow Up Discussion Questions & Answers

Question for everyone… How many of you have created a webquest ?

Webquests…say what? A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most of the information that learners interact with comes from resources on the Internet. A good WebQuest puts the power of the web behind the topic you are teaching. It enables students to self-pace while realizing the value of research through a different, more dynamic approach to learning. What should be included on a WebQuest? Introduction Task Process Assessment Conclusion Teacher Component

Text Box Question 21 st Century Learning has identified 4 C’s that need to be utilized by teachers. If you know what these skills are, use your text box to let us know.

What to incorporate in webquest? For creativity and innovation, the framework emphasizes Thinking Creatively and using Critical Thinking Skills (brainstorming techniques, creating new ideas, refining and evaluating ideas), Collaborating and Communicating with Others (communicating new ideas, being open to diverse perspectives, demonstrating orginality, viewing failure as part of the process) and Implementing Innovations (Acting on creative ideas and contributing to a field).

Smokin’ in Math Class Critical Thinking – creating of a function rule and applying rule to answer questions Creativity – creating of a digital advertisement Collaborating – Working together as a team to accomplish tasks Communicating - Sharing their answers on a public blog

Our wiki page… http://jwhitti8.wikispaces.com/ “Step by Step Guide for Creating a Webquest” A collection of “Tools for Teachers” that can be utilized in your webquest.

Questions & Answers

Next Steps Over the next two days try out some of the tools we’ve shared with you here and think about how you can use them in your classroom with your students. We encourage each of you to create a webquest to be utilizes in your classroom for the 2012-13 school year.

Next Steps That discussion is at the Teaching & Learning in the 21 st Century Blog at: http://teach-learn21.blogspot.com/ Scroll down the page to find the discussion forum for this presentation titled: [Exploring Math/Science using Webquests] Information about this is included in the workshop packet we sent out in an email.

For More Information For more information about this workshop and others go to the Center for Adolescent Literacies website at: http://literacy.uncc.edu/ Presentation materials including this Power Point are posted at: http://literacy.uncc.edu/professional- development

Thank You! Thank you for joining us today. In about a week, you will receive a short survey that helps us evaluate these workshops. Thanks in advance for filling that out.
