COMPUTER BASICS: PART III Mrs. Sealy | Thompson Middle School

What are the Home Drive, Student Share Drive, and My Documents? ◦ These are various destinations where you can save your files. Some of these save the file directly on your computer, and some of them save them elsewhere (not on your computer, but on a server).

How do you get to these destinations? ◦ Start Menu  “This PC”

How do you get to these destinations?

Home Drive ◦ Your Home Drive (also called your “H” drive) is a drive that is linked to your username and password. ◦ Information on this drive is stored on a server (NOT your computer); therefore, the files stored on this drive, can be accessed from any ACS computer.

Home Drive ◦ How do you identify your home drive? ◦ It has your name on it! Also it will have (H:) at the end.

Student Share Drive ◦ Can be accessed by other teachers and students. ◦ Do not save your work here unless INSTRUCTED. ◦ Says “Stushare” and ends in (Y:)

My Documents ◦ If you save your file here, it saves that file on that computer. It cannot be accessed from other computers.

Folders ◦ Next, it’s time to set up your folders. This will help you stay organized throughout this class. You will need to save assignments & projects to the proper folders in order to keep track of them.

Start Menu  “This PC”

Click on your HOME DRIVE. (YOUR NAME)

Click “Home” or the “New Folder” icon

Type the folder names.

◦ Name your first folder: ◦ 7 th Graders: Name it “Computer Essentials” ◦ 8 th Graders: Name it “Career Preparedness” ◦ Note: Capitalize each word!

De-select the folder once you have named it. Double-click on the folder.

Once you have double-clicked on the folder, that folder will be open. With that folder open, (Computer Essentials or Career Preparedness), you will create your other folders. Create the following folders: Computer Essentials: Microsoft Word Microsoft PowerPoint Microsoft Excel Microsoft Access Microsoft Publisher Digital Literacy Careers Final Project Typing Career Preparedness: Microsoft Word Microsoft PowerPoint Microsoft Excel Microsoft Access Career Planning Academic Planning Digital Literacy Job Process Typing

Let’s Practice Saving Documents ◦ Go to the Start menu  All Programs  Microsoft Office  Microsoft Word ◦ If you cannot find any of these steps, RAISE YOUR HAND. ◦ Double-click on “Microsoft Word” ◦ A new, blank document should appear.

Click on “File”

You should now see this screen:

Click on “Save As”

Double-Click on “Computer”

Double-Click on “This PC”

Double-Click on your “Home” Drive

Double-Click on your class folder (Computer Essentials or Career Preparedness)

Double-Click on the “Microsoft Word” folder.

Save your file name as “Test” & press “Save”

Close the Microsoft Word window. Go to your start menu. Go to “This PC” Go to your “Home” drive (your name) Double-click on your class folder. Double-click on the “Microsoft Word” folder. Double-click on the file that you named “test” and it should open.
