A clause has a subject and verb and may or may not express a complete thought.

A phrase is a group of related words that does not contain a subject and a verb.

Participle A participle is a verb form used as an adjective. A participle is part verb and part adjective.

Example Present participle The simmering chili smelled wonderful.

Example Past participle A chipped tooth can be painful.

The smiling actors bowed to the audience. Seeing the weather forecast, the chaplain called off church.
