The number one cause of systems downtime is hardware failure. What is downtime? the time during which resources are unavailable By some estimates, U.S businesses lose $4 billion annually because of downtime. E.g An online Airline reservation business can lose $90,000 per hour of downtime. An online retail business loses an average of $900,000 per hour of downtime. A credit card company could lose $2.6 million per hour of downtime. INTRODUCTION

Risk to hardware involve physical damage to computers, peripheral equipment and communications media. The causes of such damage are: 1. Natural Disasters  Rain and wind storms  Floods  Biological agents (micro-organisms, insect or vermin infestation)  Earthquakes  Volcanic eruptions TYPES OF HARDWARE FAILURE AND CAUSES

Man-Made Disasters  Acts of war and terrorism  Fires  Water (broken pipes, leaking roofs, blocked drains, fire extinguishing)  Explosions  Liquid chemical spills  Building deficiencies (structure, design, environment, maintenance)  Power failures There is another thing can cause downtime like : blackout or brownout CONT…

Blackout is total loss of electrical power. The biggest Blackout in U.S. history occurred on August 14, 2003, leaving roughly 50 million people without power. Blackouts can happen anywhere, and to any company, so being prepared is important. Brownout : reduction in voltage (can be much more dangerous for electronics than a blackout) BLACKOUT AND BROWNOUT

Server in the ground floor Most of organization prefer to locate servers in ground floor. The reason is Because servers are too heavy to bring upper floors. But most organizations forget servers in ground floor are in danger. What danger ?

This is what happen During flooding?? Seriously? This ain’t useful at all.

EARTHQUAKE Usually earthquake destroy 80% of hardware stuff. There is a only one way organization sustain after earthquake hit “ RECOVERY PLAN” if organization has good recovery plan, organization can recovery natural disaster in few days.

Disaster recovery is like insurance, seems like a waste of time and money until disaster strikes. At that point, quick and easy system and data recovery are essential and well worth the price. This usually involves four phases :  Prevention  Preparedness  Response  Recovery OVERALL DISASTER PLAN

Natural disasters cannot be prevented, but measures can be taken to eliminate or reduce the possibility of trouble. PHASE 1: PREVENTION Prevention better than cure

 Identify and minimize the risks posed by the building, its equipment and fittings, and the natural hazards of the area.  Carry out a building inspection and alter factors which constitute a potential hazard.  Establish routine housekeeping and maintenance measures to withstand disaster in buildings and surrounding areas.  Install automatic fire detection and extinguishing systems, and water- sensing alarms. Getting ready to cope.  Develop a written preparedness, response and recovery plan.  Keep the plan up-to-date, and test it.  Keep together supplies and equipment required in a disaster and maintain them.  Establish and train an in-house disaster response team. Training in : PHASE 2 : PREPAREDNESS

When disaster strikes.  Follow established emergency procedures for raising the alarm, evacuating personnel and making the disaster site safe  Contact the leader of the disaster response team to direct and brief the trained salvage personnel  When permission is given to re-enter the site, make a preliminary assessment of the extent of the damage, and the equipment, supplies and services required. PHASE 3 : RESPONSE

Getting back to normal.  Establish a programmer to restore both the disaster site and the damaged materials to a stable and usable condition.  Determine priorities for restoration work and seek the advice of a conservator as to the best methods and options, and obtain cost estimates.  Develop a phased conservation programmer where large quantities of material are involved.  Discard items not worth retaining, and replace or re-bind items not justifying special conservation treatment. PHASE 4 : RECOVERY
