GENRE

WHAT IS GENRE?  Genre – a way of classifying a novel or story

TYPES OF GENRE  Traditional Literature (TL)  Fantasy (F)  Science Fiction (SF)  Realistic Fiction (RF)  Historical Fiction (HF)  Mystery (M)  Informational (I)  Poetry (P)  Adventure (A)  Biography (B)

TRADITIONAL LITERATURE  Stories that are passed down from one group of people in history to the next.  EX: Myths, legends, fables, folktales, and fairy tales

FANTASY  A story including elements that are impossible, such as talking animals and magic. This genre is all about make believe.  EX: Harry Potter series, The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia

SCIENCE FICTION  A futuristic story that relies on machines and technology.  EX: War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, The Hunger Games, etc.

REALISTIC FICTION  A story made up of fictional characters placed in events that could actually happen.  EX: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Frindle, The Chocolate War

HISTORICAL FICTION  A story made up of fictional characters that takes place in a particular time in history. The characters are made up. The events are not.  EX: Number the Stars, Crispin, My Brother Sam is Dead, etc

ADVENTURE  Story that takes place with a character or characters having to survive the elements of nature  EX: Holes, Hatchet, Bearstone

MYSTERY  A suspenseful story centered around a puzzling event that isn’t solved until the end of the story.  EX: 39 Clues, The Westing Game, The Face on the Milk Carton, etc.

INFORMATIONAL  Factual text regarding many topics  EX: Sports, animals, science, careers, etc.

BIOGRAPHY AUTOBIOGRAPHY  Biography- a detailed account of a persons’ life written by someone else.  Autobiography – a detailed account of a persons’ life written by that person  Ex: Martin Luther King, Jr., Bill Cosby, Sammy Sosa, Bill Clinton, etc.

POETRY  Uses rhythm and rhyme to convey meaning and is written in verses and stanzas, creates or provokes thought in the reader.  EX: Where the Sidewalk Ends, If You’re Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand

QUICKWRITE  Looking at your notes, decide what type of genre is your favorite. Be sure to include at least 2 details to justify your answer.  Use A.P.E. Format  A – Answer  P – Proof  E – Explain
