2 Genres a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content

3 Fiction Non-Fiction Genre
written stories about people and events that are not real : literature that tells stories which are imagined by the writer something that is not true writing that is about facts or real events: all writing that is not fiction

4 Mystery Fictional story, usually realistic, about a mysterious event that is not explained or a crime that is not solved until the end of the story to keep the reader in suspense.

5 Realistic Fiction Form of fiction (not true)
Accurately reflects life as it could be lived today Everything in the story could happen to real people living in our natural physical world The characters have normal human powers Story may be set in real places

6 Historical Fiction A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past. Often the setting is real but the characters are made up from the author’s imagination.

7 Traditional Literature
Plots are easy to understand Characters are easily identified as good or bad. Lesson learned at end of story. Good vs Evil; Right vs Wrong Resolutions that wrap up the tale Happy Endings Folk Tales, Fairy Tales, Legends, Tall Tales, Myths and Fables are some of the Traditional Literature

8 Fantasy A story where the author event imagery events, people and creatures. Not based on reality at all. A whole word with fantastical creatures and magic. Extraordinary and beautiful events.

9 Science Fiction Future based on imagined future, scientific and technological advances. Space Time travel Aliens Life on other planets Future application of technology

10 Informational Contains real information and facts.
Explains and informs on a topic Usually contains pictures, graphs and diagrams to help explain the information.

11 Biography Is the true story of a real person’s life written by another person. Usually present events in chronological order. May include text features.

12 Autobiography The story of a real person’s life that is written by that person.

13 Poetry Verses written to create a response of thought and feeling from the reader. It often using rhythm and rhyme.
