1 Genres Ms. Noe 4 th grade Palo Alto Elementary Fall 2013

2 Main Genre Groups Fiction  Nonfiction  Poetry  Can you and a partner guess the difference between these three groups?

3 Fiction Story is based on the imagination of the author Written to entertain reader Characterized by a setting, characters, dialog (talking), problem/conflict, climax, and solution

4 Types of Fiction Traditional Literature Fantasy Science Fiction Realistic Fiction Historical Fiction Mystery

5 Stories that are passed down from one group to another throughout history and time Stories from different cultures Includes: – Folktales – Legends – Fables – Fairytales – Tall tales – myths Traditional Literature

6 Fantasy Story including elements that are impossible such as talking animals or magical powers Make-believe is what this genre is all about Can YOU think of an example of a Fantasy book? Write it on your white board that is in your desk. Have it face down on your desk when you are finished.

7 Science Fiction A type of fantasy that uses Science and Technology THINK: robots, space, time machines, aliens

8 Realistic Fiction Story is still made up but it could happen in real life Made up characters Why is Because of Winn-Dixie an example of Realistic Fiction? Talk with your table partner.

9 Historical Fiction Fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past Often the setting is real, but the characters are made up from the author’s imagination. The “American Girl” series uses made up characters to tell about the past.

10 Mystery Suspenseful story about a strange, puzzling event that isn’t solved until the end of the story

11 What Genre is this book? Based on the cover, predict what genre this book is. Write it on your white board. Put it face down on your desk when you are finished.

12 …Realistic fiction. Why? – Because it looks like it is going to be about something that could happen (maybe a fire?)

13 Nonfiction Written work based on fact Written to inform the reader Characterized by providing information about topics!!

14 Types of Nonfiction Expositiory Biography Autobiography

15 Expository Expository: any text that is informational, the purpose of the author is to inform and educate the reader.

16 Biography The story of a real person’s life written by another person

17 Autobiography The story of a real person’s life that is written by that person

18 Poetry Written to create response of thought or feeling from the reader Purpose is to express feeling Uses rhythm and rhyme to help convey its meaning

19 Now it’s time to…GENRE SORT! Wait for me to come around with a stack of books to your groups Once your group gets a stack, use your notes in your journal to try to place the books in the correct stack based on genre you do not need to read each book. Look to the front cover illustration and the “BLURB” on the back (the information on the back) to decide. You can also skim through the book if you would like.
