1 Identifying Fiction Genres
Genre Who? Identifying Fiction Genres

2 What is a genre? Genre is simply a fancy name for a group of books which share the same style, form, or content. That is, books that are similar in some way.

3 Are there genres in non-fiction and fiction books?
Yes! Non-fiction genres include all of the Dewey classes as well as autobiographies and biographies. Fiction genres can be divided into many different categories.

4 Can you think of any examples of fiction genres?

5 Realistic Fiction These are stories that take place in modern time, right here and now. The characters are involved in events that could really happen.

6 Mystery/Suspense Fictional stories, usually realistic,  about a mysterious event which is not explained or a crime that is not solved until the end of the story to keep the reader in suspense.

7 Fantasy Fiction that contains elements that are NOT realistic, such as talking animals, magical powers, etc.   Make-believe is what this genre is all about.

8 Science Fiction Stories which include futuristic technology; a blend of scientific fact and fictional elements.

9 Historical Fiction Stories which take place in a particular time period in the past.   Often the basic setting is real, but the characters are fictional.

10 Folk Tales and Fairy Tales
Folk tales are stories with no known creator.  They were originally passed down from one generation to another by word of mouth.   Fairy tales were often created to teach children behavior in an entertaining way.

11 How well do you know the different genres?
Let’s see!
