2 FOUNDATION HISTORY Sponsored by Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio Funded by sale of Incarnate Word Hospital in 1997 Began with a corpus of $30 million and has distributed more than $15 million in grants

5 Mission, Vision and Values

Mission As a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, the Foundation’s mission is to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word. 4 ORGANIZATION

Vision A community where the poor and marginalized, especially women, children, and seniors, are empowered to attain quality of life. 5 ORGANIZATION

Values ● Incarnational Spirituality ● Innovation ● Empowerment ● Stewardship ● Collaboration 6 ORGANIZATION

Spheres of Synergies Definition: the Foundation seeks to improve the lives of the following target populations: ● Women ● Children/Youth ● Seniors 7 ORGANIZATION

Place-Based Approach The Foundation has identified a place-based approached as its principal method of achieving community change. During , impoverished neighborhoods in North St. Louis are the primary place-based geographical area. The majority of the Foundation’s strategies will be employed so that the residents, community leaders, and agency staff can implement their vision for the community. East St. Louis has been designated as a secondary placed- based area. The Foundation will monitor the opportunity for a more in-depth presence in that community. 8 ORGANIZATION

14 Goals

Goal: North St. Louis  Improve the quality of life of North St. Louis residents 10 GOALS

Goal: Community Change  Serve as the catalyst for community change 11 GOALS

THE GRANT PROCESS 12 EMD Consulting Group, LLC -

ANNUAL GRANTS  $10,000 or less  Support for the overall mission of the agency  Agencies with a budget of $1 million or less can request funds for operations, programs and services, or projects.  Agencies with a budget greater than $1 million can only request funds for innovative projects and must provide matching funds for the project.

GEOGRAPHIC AREAS The Foundation will be limiting funding to the following areas:  North St. Louis  The Ville  Penrose  O’Fallon  East St. Louis  Funding will be limited in East St. Louis. Please contact the Foundation before applying,

ADVOCACY GRANTS  Foundation makes a limited number of Advocacy Grants  Overall process is the same, except  Grants are reviewed by the Advocacy Committee  Focus is on systemic change  Committee generally meets with the applicants

ETHICAL & RELIGIOUS DIRECTIVES  Foundation fund religiously-sponsored groups, as well as non- sectarian agencies  Directives are a criteria for eligibility for funding  Origin of Directives  Review of proposals when the Ethical and Religious Directives are an issue

Within the three page-letter of intent, include:

PROPOSAL CRITIQUE  Critique of proposal relative to:  Compatibility of mission and core values  Community need/population served  Organizational leadership  Collaboration  Track record  Financial accountability  Potential impact and outcomes  Leverage

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND  We really are focused on North St. Louis and East St. Louis—projects in other geographic areas will only be funded if those efforts are truly innovative (and that will be rare)  Don’t stretch your project to make it fit the focus  Be honest  Write the letter of intent/proposal yourself  Don’t contact Board members; they won’t exert inappropriate influence

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND  If you are collaborating—truly collaborate— networking or referrals is not collaboration  Community involvement is a plus  Accurate budgeting is a factor

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND, CONT.  If you have a question, ask the secretary at the foundation and she will refer to me if necessary  The deadline is the deadline—no exceptions

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND, CONT.  If you are not funded, find out why  Agencies will receive a letter delineating why the concept paper or proposal was not accepted. If what is in the letter is not sufficient, then call.  If you are funded, send a thank you  Complete the evaluation in a timely manner
