2 Amateur Sports Governance The Amateur Sports Act of 1978 established the governance structure for amateur Olympic sports in the United States. The U.S. Olympic Committee is responsible for governing Olympic affairs in the United States. The USOC recognizes only one national governing body (NGB) for each sport. An NGB is the sports organization that is recognized by and affiliated with an international federation. – Governance includes rule making, selecting and managing teams for international competitions, certifying officials and coaches, running national championships, etc. NGBs are charged with developing the sport from the grassroots level through the Olympic level. Although lacrosse has yet to be granted Olympic status, and has not been recognized by the USOC, US Lacrosse was formed as the sport’s NGB in 1998 in order to achieve the standard of amateur sports governance in the U.S. and best position the sport for greater growth and recognition. The US Lacrosse structure is based on the tenets of the Amateur Sports Act.

5 Board of Directors – Meets in January, June and September (subject to change) – 25 voting members (includes Game Chairs) – Three-year terms (up to two consecutive terms) – Balanced representation of men’s and women’s lacrosse – The Board Development Committee, chaired by the Past Chair, presents new nominees to the Board for approval each June – Sets organizational policy & establishes organizational direction – Provides oversight of national administration – Responsible for stewardship for the sport

7 Executive Committee – Meets in February, April, May, July, August, October & December – Comprised of the Chair, Incoming Chair, Past Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, the Women’s and Men’s Game Committee Chairs and Co-Counsel – Monitors the business, routine affairs and other activities of US Lacrosse between Board meetings – Provides direct management oversight of the President & CEO

9 Board Committees – Board Development – primary functions are to regularly review and evaluate overall Board performance; assess and track current and anticipated needs for Board composition; implement Board approved Board orientation; recommend ongoing program of Board education; recommend a process to the Board for annual assessment of collect Board’s performance – Strategic Planning – responsible for leading an organization-wide process to develop, continually monitor and provide annual progress updates with respect to the US Lacrosse Strategic Plan – Sport Development – focuses on coaches and officials education and recruitment; athlete/parent education; sports science and safety; and Olympic development – Regional Chapters – provides responsive and effective leadership and facilitation to US Lacrosse recognized chapters – Finance – oversees the budget; financial policies and procedures; financial reporting; annual audit; investments; and insurance and risk management – Men’s Game – see page 15 – Women’s Game – see page 18 – Human Resources - focuses on employee personnel policies; employee compensation structure; employee grievance procedure; volunteer policy and procedures – Sport Science & Safety – responsible for advising the Board of Directors and various other committees of US Lacrosse, as well as to serve as a source of lacrosse sport safety education for the national lacrosse community

13 Men’s Game Committee Responsible for supporting US Lacrosse staff in the ongoing development and safety of the Men’s Game Serves as the focal point for ongoing efforts to promote synergy between the Women’s Game and the Men’s Game in the sport of lacrosse. Reports to the Board of Directors and is the primary vehicle for communications between the Board and the Men’s Game constituencies. Meets jointly with the Women’s Game Committee as determined by the Board of Directors to identify and discuss areas of appropriate collaboration and consistency. Includes the Chair, five current members of the Board of Directors and up to fourteen additional members. Men’s Game Committee and sub-committees will be primarily focused on youth and high school lacrosse.
