Agenda Introduction 2.Homework 3.Activity 4: Handling Hazardous Materials at Home 4.Discussion & Review

Homework Work on science fair project

Objective Students will be able to: –Identify the risks associated with the use of hazardous materials at home.

Purpose Students will be able to: –Identify and handle hazardous materials at home safely.

PRE-LAB: flammable, corrosive, toxic. DATA Paste the table provided by your teacher. Read the Introduction (A13) Activity 4: Hazardous Materials at Home

Data 1.Complete the “names” section 2.Read each statement and tell (circle) if each of you agree or disagree with the statement. These are your predictions.

Activity 4: Hazardous Materials at Home Watch the Video

Activity 4: Hazardous Materials at Home Data Read each statement again and tell (+/-) if your predictions (circled answers) for each was correct/incorrect.

Activity 4: Hazardous Materials at Home Analysis Answer Analysis Questions 1-3 (p.A18) Share and explain your answers

Analysis Question 1 In what ways can household products be harmful? Household products that are hazardous can be toxic, corrosive or flammable. They can contain metals that are toxic to humans. They can accumulate in ecosystems and cause harm to organisms. If they are handled, stored or disposed of incorrectly, some can react with other chemicals and cause harmful accidents.

Analysis Question 2 Give an example of a product that can no longer be discarded in the garbage. Explain why this is no longer allowed. Batteries are one example of a product that can no longer be discarded in the garbage in most states. They contain heavy metals that can accumulate in the ground and groundwater if they end up in a open garbage dumps or landfills.

Analysis Question 3 Where in people’s homes do you think they are likely to have the greatest number of household hazardous products? Places where automotive, cleaning or painting supplies are stored.
