Chapter 3 Licenses and Permits

Purpose of Driver Licensing To assure that no one using the HTS is an unreasonable risk to themselves or others

Three Types of Permits Driver Education Permit—paperwork to prove age, social security number and 20/40 “corrected” eyesight. Driver Ed teacher must have to drive student Limited Learner’s Permit—successfully completed 30/6. 15 years old. Driver’s Eligibility certificate. Pass the DMV written test and sign test. Pay $10 Temporary Learner’s Permit—One year from passing the written test—pass the DMV road test, pass vision test, produce social security card, proof of age, pay $10

Graduated License Law Pass an approved driver education course Must be at least 15 but less than 18 Limited to driving 5am to 9pm first 6 months.00 BAC All occupants of the vehicle belted in Drive with licensed driver with 5 years experience Must complete 6 months driving without any violation 6 months from level one issuance, you are eligible to drive anytime with your supervisor for another 6 months. You will keep this license for one year.

Level Two Must be at least 16 year old but less than BAC All passengers belted in Drive 5am to 9pm by yourself after 9pm you are with your supervisor Must be violation free for 6 months to graduated. Any violation starts the 6 months over again. Repeat until 18 Only one peer passenger is allowed

Level Three Upon completion of 6 months of driving with on convictions of moving violations or seat belt infraction, you are eligible to receive a level three license.

Cell Phones Cell phones including texting, are prohibited at all three levels. If you need to use your cell phone, find a safe place to stop.

Thinking of Dropping Out? Beginning August 1, 1998 driver license applicants less than 18 years old must have a driving eligibility certificate, high school diploma, or is equivalent to be eligible for a NC driving permit or license. Must make satisfactory progress toward graduation. Pass 70% of their classes If you loss it….$25 restoration fee

Types of NC License Class A—allows someone to drive any vehicle including combination in excess of 26,000 pounds Class B—allows someone to drive a single vehicle in excess of 26,000 pounds Class C—allows someone to drive a combination vehicle up to 26,000

Implied Consent Program In NC, you agree that you know the laws and you are willing to abide by them. This also applies DWI, radar detectors and construction zones.

Organ Donor Program You may indicate your desire to be an organ donor by filing out an organ donation declaration on your driver’s license or by signing an organ donor card.

Driver License Corrections In NC, a person has 60 days to change their address or move into this state as a resident. You must also get a new license if you change your name.

Lose Control, Lose Your License Possession or sale of alcohol or illegal controlled substance on school property Possession of a weapon on school property Physical assault on a teacher or school personnel on school property SUSPENSION FOR MORE THAN 10 DAYS. LOSE YOUR LICENSE 1 YEAR
