Social Studies Map Skills Week 1: Continent, Country, State, Parish, City

Week 1 TLW locate and label places on a map or globe; the seven continents, the United States and its major landforms, major bodies of water and waterways. G-1A-3 TLW differentiate between countries, states, parishes, and cities. G-1C-E6

City A city is very large important town. What is the name of your city? Slidell

Parish/county A parish is a division or part of a state with its own local government. It includes several cities. Louisiana is the only state to have parishes. All other states have counties. What is the name of your parish? St. Tammany Parish

Week 2 Here’s What we are thinking about. Volcanoes Hurricanes Tornados How do they affect the land? Turn to your shoulder partner and tell them what you think. “B” starts.

How do volcanoes affect the land? They destroy vegetation with flowing lava and ash that falls from the sky. Lava turns into rock creating new land and rocks. All things die under the hot lava. There is less area to grow plants.

How do hurricanes affect the land? The water and wind cause erosion of land or loss of land. Strong winds destroy plants and vegetation. Too much water can cause soil to be useless for growing crops.

How do tornadoes affect the land? Strong winds cause damage to trees and other plants. The area has less people because homes are destroyed.

Symbols Symbols are pictures that represent something.

Key or legend A key or legend is an area on the map that shows us what each symbol represents.

Scale Scale is the section of the map that shows how much smaller the map is compared to the real area it represents.

Directions Directions tell which way to go.

Compass Rose A compass rose is a symbol on a map which indicates the directions for a map.

Cardinal Directions North South East West

Equator The equator is a zero degree line of latitude that separates the Northern hemisphere from the Southern Hemisphere.

Prime Meridian The prime meridian is the zero degree line of longitude that separates the eastern and western hemisphere.
