Romans 6-8 6:1-11—Freedom for sin, life in God 6:12-23—Free to serve 7:1-6—Freedom from the law 7:7-12—Acquaintance with sin through the law 7:13-25—sin and death 8:1-13—The flesh and the Spirit 8:13-17—Children of God through adoption 8:17-28 —Destiny of glory 8:28-39—God’s indomitable love in Christ

6:1-11—Freedom from sin; life in God Earlier in Romans Paul was talking to the Jews, now he’s talking to us Christians In your table groups talk about your baptism.

Baptism Questions How old were you? Where was it? Who were/are your godparents Why were they chosen? What did being a child of God mean to your parents? What does baptism mean to you?

6:1-11—Freedom form sin; life in God This passage is always read at Easter Vigil. “He died to sin once and for all; as to his life, he lives for God.” Paul once again, preaching Christ Crucified and expects the Christian church to choose life and say no to the slavery of sin.

6:12-23—Free to serve If you buy the first eleven verses, now you gotta walk the talk! The metaphors are: sin=slavery grace=freedom

7:1-6— Freedom from the law Christians cannot sin The widow is free from her husband The Christian is free from the old law and baptized into a new glorified being. Vs4b You were also put to death to the law through the body of Christ, so that you might belong to another, to the one who was raised from the dead in order that we might bear fruit for God.

7:7-12—Acquaintance with sin through the law Paul deals with the relation of the law to sin. Ego A new face of law

7:13-25—sin and death Paul‘s explanation is not yet complete; he now probes more deeply. How could sin use something good in itself to destroy human beings? The problem is not with the law, but with human beings themselves

Chapter 8 Paul announces that justified Christians have been empowered to live a new life as the result of God’s love manifested in the liberating acts of Christ. Now that liberation from sin, death, and the law has taken place, they are able to live this life “for God” whose love is poured out through the dynamic principle of such life, the Spirit of God himself.

8:1-13—The flesh and the Spirit Christ has rescued humans from enslavement and made it possible for the to live “according to the Spirit” Development of the theme: Christian existence is dominated by the Spirit Because of the Spirit, a Christian is a child of God, adopted and destined for the glory of God’s intimate presence

What do you know about the Holy Spirit?

8:13-17—Children of God through adoption As Paul contemplates this plan of salvation, he indulges in rhetoric and extols the love God made manifest in Christ Jesus.

8:17-28 —Destiny of glory The spirit not only gives us new life but also established for human a relationship of an adopted children and HEIRS. Material creation, hope itself, and the Spirit all bear witness to this glorious destiny. Verse 28 We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

8:28-39—God’s indomitable love in Christ Paul concludes this section with a passage about the love of God made manifest in Christ Jesus. No little emotional language and some rhythmic phrasing mark the passage

Next Week Lessons 9-10 Romans 9-12 Pages 51-63

Verse For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor power, not height, nor depth, nor other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
