Romans 8 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
2
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
3
The Dilemma Solved Romans 8
We believe We have faith Our faith does not keep us from sinning Our belief does not make us better
4
So if the law can not save us
And if faith saves us Why do we often feel like we are taking one step forwards and two steps backwards
5
As believers we receive certain benefits Why we receive these benefits
The Apostle Paul says As believers we receive certain benefits Why we receive these benefits The power that is at work We also have an obligation
6
Let us look at the benefits The apostle wants to entice
#1 Let us look at the benefits The apostle wants to entice Look at what we receive!
7
Romans 8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation… 11 …he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.
8
23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
9
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.
10
28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
11
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12
For me, there is no condemnation
Instead, for me, there is life My body will be redeemed in eternity The spirit helps me and intercedes for me God, our father, will work for the good I are more than conqueror I am confident that God will not let me go
13
The obvious question is…
#2 The obvious question is… Why? Because we believe More importantly because when we believe we are brought into a family relationship with God through Christ
14
Romans 8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
15
14 …. those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God
14 ….those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
16
16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ…
17
God set me free from the law of sin and death
I have the Spirit of God within I am God’s child and I call God, “Father” I am God’s heirs and co-heirs with Christ
18
When we are declared his children We have all the rights of a child
Right that apply to children born of the flesh or adopted
19
Paul describes the power (the logic) that is at work
#3 Paul describes the power (the logic) that is at work Remember that for Paul faith must be logical
20
Romans 8 5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
21
6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.
22
29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
23
31 …If God is for us, who can be against us
31 …If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
24
33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen
33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
25
My choice God’s choice God’s power God’s relationship with me
26
So what is our responsibility?
#4 So what is our responsibility? So far we have heard what we receive, why we receive it and the logic if the salvation process Now we are confronted with our responsibility
27
Romans 8 12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
28
18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.
29
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
30
I will strive to live by the Spirit
I will strive allow to Spirit to lead me I will strive live with suffering I will not deny my Lord If necessary I will suffer for my faith No matter what life throws at me, I will love and serve my Lord
31
The apostle walks a fine line between God’s power and our choice
Between God holding us and us holding onto to God’s grace Between “God works for the good of those who love Him”, but some of us must suffer more
32
Putting it all together
What we receive from God far outweighs what we are called to do Because we have so little to do with our salvation There is no need to get smug about our relationship with God
33
Putting it all together God is God and God has the power
We are the powerless Our sphere of power and choice is limited We need to become comfortable with our limitations
34
Putting it all together
We are children of the forgiving, merciful, gracious and mighty King Our king has declared us his children and heirs to his salvation We do not live in fear because we are held by the hands of a mighty King
35
The Lord wants to bring the benefits of salvation
When we say, “Yes” to Christ, we become God’s children This is made possible because God opened the doors through the gift of the blood of Christ
36
We can not be perfect but… Because of everything Christ has done
Out of gratitude We strive to live by the Spirit
