Romans 8:13-17 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

3. Living A Spirit-led Life

4. THE HOLY SPIRIT A.We receive the Spirit when we are baptized. 1.Acts 2:37-39 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" (38) Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (39) For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."

5. THE HOLY SPIRIT A.We receive the Spirit when we are baptized. 2.Acts 19:1-5 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples (2) he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." (3) And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." (4) Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." (5) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6. THE HOLY SPIRIT B.Having the Spirit proves we belong to Christ. Romans 8:5-11 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. (6) For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. (8) So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

7. THE HOLY SPIRIT (9) But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. (10) And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (11) But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

8. THE HOLY SPIRIT C.Having the Spirit confirms our sonship. Galatians 4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"

9. I.THE HOLY SPIRIT KEEPS US FROM LIVING ACCORDING TO THE FLESH. Romans 8:13a For if you live according to the flesh you will die;

10. II. THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS US TO PUT TO DEATH THE DEEDS OF THE FLESH. Romans 8:13b but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

11. III. THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS US TO SONSHIP. Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

12. IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT TAKES OUR FOCUS AWAY FROM OUR FEARS. Romans 8:15a For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

13. V. THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS US INTO A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AS OUR FATHER. Romans 8:15b but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

14. VI. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A WITNESS OF OUR SONSHIP. Romans 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

15. VII. THE HOLY SPIRIT ASSURES OUR INHERITANCE. Romans 8:17a and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ,

16. VIII. THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL TEACH US THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUFFERING AND GLORY. Romans 8:17b if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

17. WHAT ABOUT YOU? A.Do you have the Spirit of Christ? B.Have you been baptized into Christ for the remission of your sins and received the Spirit? C.Are you being led by the Spirit to obey God in all things? D.Are you, by the Spirit, putting to death the sinful deeds of the body. E.Are you assured of your home in heaven?
