Why People Live Where They Live

Population Map

Great Britain Population 1.In the South, center, along the coast, and near major cities 2.Urban land is in the center of the country 3.Many people live along the coast and inland.

Great Britain Climate 1.Marine Climate –its temperate—warm summer, cool and wet winter 2.It is affected by a warm current--The Gulf Stream– which keeps it warm for its latitude) 3.The mild climate keeps ports free of ice and open for trade all year.

Great Britain- Resources Coal is found on the island of the United Kingdom Oil and Gas are found off the coast in the North Sea There is a lot of manufacturing.

Great Britain-Physical Features It’s an island -this is a barrier because it means they must do all trading by sea or air. -it’s good because there are so many ports.

Russia- Population 1.Most people live in the western part of Russia near the major cities and along rivers (Moscow, St. Petersburg) 2.The urban land is in the west but most of Russia is rural. 3.Most people live inland since it’s coasts border the Arctic Ocean and are too cold.

Russia- Climate 1.4 climate zones: tundra, subarctic, humid continental, and semi- arid 2. Russia is not really affected by a current. There are some cold currents on its northern coast, but it’s too far inland to get the benefits of the Gulf Stream.

Russia- Resources 1. Energy resources are located throughout the country but those in the tundra (where there is permafrost) are hard to extract from the ground. 2. Has oil, gas, coal and many minerals/metals

Russia- Physical Features 1.Ural Mountains split the European part of the country from the Asian part of the country. -Also, the country is mostly partly frozen tundra 2. Russia’s large size and cold climate make it difficult for Russians to use and trade their resources. - The lack of a coastline makes trade hard. The only coastline they have is the Arctic Ocean which is usually frozen, so they really need a warm-water port.

Population Map

Germany- Population 1.All over! Especially: along the coast and near major cities. Germany is the most densely populated country in Europe. 2.Urban land spans the whole western part of the county, plus the North East and east-central part of the country. Rural land is also present (North European Plain) 3.People live equally among the coast and inland

Germany- Climate 1. Marine climate- temperate (warm summers, cold wet winters) 2. The proximity to the ocean (Gulf Stream) keeps Germany warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It has arable land for farming.

Germany- Resources 1.Germany has several natural resources including coal, agriculture, and minerals like zinc and lead spread throughout the county. 2.The Rhine River region is densely populated with industry.

Germany-Physical Features 1.North European Plain, Rhine River, Danube River 2.It is at the center of Western Europe and therefore close with several important trading partners—rivers and highways make trade easy. It also has access to the sea for shipping to other continents.

Population Map

Italy-Population 1.In the north by major cities, along the coasts by major cities 2.Urban area is in the north and on the western coast. 3.People live on the coast and inland in the north and along the coast in the west and south.

Italy-Climate 1.Mediterranean Climate- hot and dry summers with mild and rainy winters. 2.No currents affect Italy.

Italy- Resources 1.Small farms cover much of the country. The coast for fishing opportunities. There is also natural gas in the middle of the county. 2.Crops like grapes and olives, some natural gas and metals

Italy- Physical Features 1. The Alps, it’s a peninsula 2. It has access to the sea, which is helpful for trade. The Alps to the north create a trade barrier for land trade.
