Chapter 5: Operations with Fractions 5.2 Fractions & Decimals

Long Division Review

Decimals To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator Terminating decimal: –The division ends with a remainder of zero Repeating decimal: –The division is a never ending process –The same block of digits repeats infinitely many times

Example 1 A customer at a delicatessen asks for ¾ lb of potato salad. The scale reads Is the customer getting the amount of potato salad she requested?

Example 1a Write each fraction as a decimal:

Example 2 Write each fraction as a decimal:

Ordering Numbers Use a common method of comparison: –Put all of the numbers into fractions –Put all of the numbers into decimals Be sure to double check the order (least to greatest, greatest to least)

Example 3 Write the numbers in order, from least to greatest: ¼, -0.2, -3/5, 1.1

Example 3a Write the numbers from least to greatest: -1/8, -0.75, -1/4,

Conversions Decimal to fraction: –Know your place values! –Put the decimal part of the number over the appropriate power of 10 (from its place value)

Example 4 Write 1.12 as a mixed number in simplest form.

Example 4a Write 2.32 as a mixed number in simplest form.

Example 5 Write the repeating decimal as a fraction in simplest form: Write as an equation. Multiply each side by 100. Subtract the same value from both sides (we know that n = 0.72 already, so that counts as a same value!) Simplified. Divide both sides to isolate the variable. Reduce the fraction on the right side.

Example 5a Write the decimal as a fraction in simplest form:
