Lessons 5.1 and 5.2: Rational Numbers Adding Like Fractions Rational Number: Any number that can be written as a fraction. Any number EXCEPT a decimal that goes on forever and does not repeat. Examples of rational numbers: 3, -12, 8.172, Following is Irrational (NOT Rational)

2 Write the mixed number as an improper fraction
1) 2) Write the fraction as a decimal 1) = (numerator divided by denominator) 2) 3) = 4)

3 Write as a fraction or mixed number
1) 0.23 2) –2.025

4 Like Fractions have the same denominator
To add or subtract like fractions: 1) Add or subtract the numerators 2) Keep the denominator 3) Write in simplest form.
