RISE Conference 9 th November 2012 Premier’s be active Challenge Participation by students with disability

Premier's be active Challenge in brief Involvement of students with disability Links between movement and learning Data

A statewide Physical Activity Program Why?

Populations with disabilty are more likely to be sedentary that the general population Taylor et al (1998) – studies indicate a change in Physical Activity participation for people with disability post intervention.

The Challenge… … recognises schools with certificates at 10 weeks … recognises students with medals at 4 weeks … is to do at least 60 minutes of Physical Activity a day on at least 5 days per week (not just at school) … is a 10 week Challenge for all Reception to Year 9 students

Negotiated Premier’s be active Challenge:

Anecdotal Evidence Schools: “Because of their disabilities, they find it difficult to participate in main stream physical activities. The challenge offers the opportunity of activity that meets their needs and abilities. It is a fun and highly beneficial program for them” (Kilparrin) Parents – J’s story

Links to learning Quote from Pt Lincoln Special School in 2011 “Increased focus on PA, introduction of daily movement program has also seen increase levels of attention and engagement during literacy. It is a whole school approach – movement sessions in literacy block – reengages learners – higher literacy outcomes.”

Studies in US by John Ratey link increased activity to increased focus and motivation in the classroom. Australian schools with fitter children achieve better literacy and numeracy results, according to Telford (2012).
