3 Let’s start with a few ???? Interactive Poll Text to number: 22333
Text body: mirandakuehl003 Have to activate link How many of your children participate in physical activity outside of school? How much physical activity does your child participate in daily? 10-20 30-40 60 or more lls/wFdCvkixmBxgVjr

4 Recommended amount of physical activity
60 minutes daily - moderate/vigorous 150 minutes of physical education (Elementary) 225 minutes of physical education (Middle/High) This pyramid is similar to the food pyramid but it is for physical acitvity

5 Effects of Physical Activity on Brain - Linked with -
Blood flow Growth of hippocampus Learning & memory part of brain Nerve connection development Enhanced attention Increased processing of information Improved management skills Improved attitudes Linked with - 10-45 day study 60 minutes of physical activity daily According to CDC, physical activity has a couple of different positive affects on the brain. It can increase blood flow, growth of the hippocampus, which is the learning & memory part of the brain. Physical activity also affects the nerve connection within the brain. All of these positive effects from physical activities are linked to academic achievement in different ways. It is linked to enhancing attention span and increasing the processing of information for children. Along with those, it also improves management skills and attitudes of children. Picture shows someone who exercised over period of time. The brain become bigger & stronger which increases it the memory & ability to learn

6 Physical Education & Academic Achievement
20% of curricular time for physical activity More rapid learning Moderate to Vigorous PA Most effective on academic improvement Quality & Quantity Type of activity Time spent QUALITY Physical Education programming is our mission Based on Roy Shepherds study, he found out that if students get (1st bullet point) -retain information better & faster -learning is more effective If your child has 5 classes in a day, 1 of them should be physical education Examples of Moderate to Vigorous -Brisk walking, running, tennis, biking Quality is demonstrating the type of activity that students are engaging in Quantity means that time that students are spending doing physical activity The overall meaning of quality and quantity is that most of the time if students have a quality physical education class they are going to get the amount of physical activity that they need, such as moderate to vigorous, which in turn increases academic achievement. PIcture from napervill, IL & did research with students there & have research that pe can increase academic performance.

7 Physical Literacy Physical literacy = ability, confidence & desire to be physically active for life Competence V. Confidence Similar to Math and Reading Literacy Source: Shape America Physical Literacy: An individual's ability, confidence and desire to be physically active for life. is the ability to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person. As physical education professionals we target physical literacy development in our lessons and curriculum

8 Cross Curricular Learning
Aligned Cooperative Conceptual Definition Source: Ben Johnson author of the article Deeper Learning: Why Cross Curricular Teaching is Essential Definition: Cross curriculum involves working with educators from other departments to align curriculums so that knowledge, concepts, and tactics are aligned simultaneously in more than one class. Aligned Follow a similar path of educators in different departments. Cooperative Teaching at similar rates as other educators. Conceptual Using concepts learned in other subjects to assist students in your course.

9 Classroom-based Physical Activity
4th and 5th grade students Compared exercise “brain” breaks versus sedentary class time Aerobic Physical Activity??? (what does this mean?) 10+ minutes of physical activity are optimal for enhancing attention & potential learning outcomes Maybe you have heard the buzz word “Brain Breaks” Classroom teachers integrating a physical movement “BREAK” from the sedentary class structure of sitting/working/listening Researchers looked at best practice for PA time to enhance attention and focus Acute Effects of Classroom Exercise Breaks on Executive Function and Math Performance: A Dose–Response Study Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport

10 Physical Activity, Exercise, & Physical Education
We have discussed several key terms in our presentation thus far so I want to clarify these movement terms COULD YOU provide a definition for RECESS?
