3. Overview
Two years funding from the DfE to improve outcomes for pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.
Three strands:
To pilot free training and consultancy to 16 schools (4 clusters) in England
Develop a comprehensive range of universally available online learning resources for schools
Build capacity and sustainability for YoungMinds through developing and marketing income-generating training courses for educational professionals

4. Project aims
Support the emotional wellbeing of the whole school community – pupils, parents and professionals
Address the specific needs of pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties
Promote the emotional wellbeing of all children and young people in a way that also supports their academic achievement

6. Target group
Focus is on early intervention in schools i.e. pupils aged years
Schools’ pilot to work with four school clusters, each to include one secondary (or KS3 special) school and three primary (or KS1&2 special) schools

8. Training and Consultancy Programme
Core Knowledge: Perspectives on Behaviour (1-day)
Core Knowledge: Attachment, Neuroscience and Learning (1-day)
Choice of 2 Interventions: Therapeutic Storywriting Groups or Story Links (3-day)
2 x 1 hr consultation with SMT on whole school issues relating to behaviour and emotional well being

9. Core Knowledge: Perspectives on Behaviour (1-day)
Compare the following theoretical perspectives on behaviour:
Behaviourist
Cognitive-behavioural
Systemic
Humanistic
Psychodynamic
Explore the implications of this understanding for classroom practice and the school behaviour policy
Target group: 2/3 members of SMT from each school
Mode of delivery: Cascade training

10. Core Knowledge: Attachment, Neuroscience and Learning (1-day)
Secure and insecure patterns of attachment
Neuroscience and the relationship between emotional and cognitive development
Implications of attachment patterns for learning in school
Use of published stories to support positive attachment and emotional literacy
Target group: 2/3 members of SMT from each school
Mode of delivery: Cascade training

11. Therapeutic Storywriting Groups
Evidence-based 10 week intervention that uses story metaphor to process difficult emotions while developing writing skills
Works with groups of up to 6 pupils identified as having BESDs
Research* shows that Therapeutic Storywriting Groups develop social skills, help to process difficult emotions and improve engagement with writing
Target group: SENCOs + SEN teachers, HLTAs, Learning Mentors or School counsellors supporting pupils with BESDs at KS 2 & 3
Mode of delivery: 3-day training direct to professionals implementing intervention *

12. Story Links: working with parents of pupils at risk of exclusion
10 week intervention involving parents in co-creating stories that address their child’s emotional and behavioural issues (see video on next slide for overview of the intervention)
Research* shows that Story Links improves parental involvement in their child’s learning, reduces exclusion and supports pupils’ engagement with reading
Target group: SENCOs + SEN teachers, HLTAs, Learning Mentors or School counsellors supporting pupils with BESDs at KS 2 & 3
Mode of delivery: 3-day training direct to professionals implementing story Links intervention *

14. Consultation Duration: 1 hour pre- and 1 hour post- pilot programme
Content: Whole schools issues relating to emotional wellbeing and BESDs.
Target audience: Headteacher and SMT
Location: At your school

16. Steering Groups
A National Steering Group that will meet five times over the course of the project
Each cluster will set up a local steering group to meet before and after delivery of training and consultancy
