College Applications: The Process  Choices:  Private Schools  Schools Outside California  University of California  California State University  Community Colleges

Making Decisions  The Questions! How big; how far away;class sizes; majors, special programs; location; admission policies; costs and financial aid; campus life; academic reputation; career preparation.

Making Your Choices  The College Visit: Meet a counselor; verify requirements; determine costs; inquire about scholarship opportunities; take a tour; investigate your desired program; attend a class; talk with students and faculty.  What About Housing? Look into all housing options, and investigate all meal plans thoroughly. Make sure you comply with housing application deadlines, which may be different from admission deadlines.

Campus Safety Your chosen school should be able to offer their campus safety strategies to you. Conduct a thorough investigation by reading the campus newspaper regularly and by contacting the local police.

Testing Requirements What Do I Need for My Schools?  SAT Reasoning Test  SAT Subject Tests  ACT  AP  IB  Entry Level Writing Requirement(UC)  EPT, ELM(CSU) (What is the EAP?)

The Application  The Transcript: Use an unofficial transcript to complete your application; send an official transcript to schools upon request. (The UC and CSU do not want one yet!)  The Resume: Put together a summary of information about yourself, and give it to your recommenders for both college and scholarship use.  The Essay: You should begin asap, no matter when your application is due. Get feedback from others. Pay attention to the prompts, which differ by school.  Letters of Recommendation: Not all schools require them, but, if you need them, choose writers who know you well, and give them the form as well as an addressed envelope and due date. Follow up with a THANK YOU!

The Application  Early Decision, Early Action, etc.  Make a Copy  Certificate of Mailing for all mailed documents  Deadlines: Private and out of state—varies; UC—November 30 CSU—November 30

Scholarships and Financial Aid  January 11Financial Aid Night-7:30/PAC  February 26Common Scholarship Applications Become Available in CCC March 2FAFSA Deadline March 23Common Scholarship Applications Due to CCC By 3:00

Resources  The World Wide Web  Print  College and Career Center  Private Services  Be careful of the rankings! Use them as a tool to learn about schools, but not as sacred word!

A Few Important Web Sites!

The Waiting Game  When will I know? Most admissions decisions are made in the spring, usually by April.  What should I do in the meantime? Continue to explore and form a preliminary priority list, so your final decisions won’t be rushed.  What about appeals? Most schools discourage them; consult your counselor for more information.

The Final Steps  Consider your options, including financial aid.  Negotiate; assert yourself!  Submit your SIR on time!  Follow up with all deposits, etc.

The Final Steps  Request your final transcript!  Ask your parents not to redecorate your room just yet—especially if you’re not going away to school!  Don’t forget to write! (see previous bullet)

The Dates!  October 11—CSU Application Workshop  And Senior Parent Meeting!  October 18–UC Application Workshop  Oct. 31/Nov. 1—Many Early Decision Deadlines

The Dates!  Oct.1-Nov. 30: CSU Filing Period  Nov. 1-Nov. 30: UC Filing Period  November-January—Regular deadlines for many private and out of state public schools  January 1-March 2-- File the FAFSA  January 12, 2006—NPHS Financial Aid Night  March through April—Acceptance Notifications arrive  May 1—Statements of Intent to Register due

Counseling Session  Make appointments to see your counselor for assistance—soon!  You may send your application user names and passwords, as well as your essays, to your counselor for review.  Present your recommenders with complete information; i.e. forms signed, resumes complete, and all materials submitted at least two weeks before due dates.
