All unused samples must be dumped into the Slop Tank on west side of Octane room. Special Instructions  This procedure is used to determine the Oxidation Stability of Gasoline  Any problems, notify Shift Supervisor or Duane Chaisson Scope / Objective Note: This procedure is only valid at the time of printing. The control version can be found on the Meraux Refinery intranet. Completed Date:Prepared By:Approved By: Description of Terms Break Point: The point in the pressure – Time curve that is preceded by a pressure drop of exactly 2 psi within 15 minutes and succeeded by a drop of not less than 2 psi in 15 minutes. Induction Period: The time elapsed between the placing of the bomb in the bath and the break point at 212 F. Preparation 1Wash glass sample container with gum solvent (Acetone & Toluene). 2Rinse glass container with water. 3Wash glass sample container with detergent cleaning solution. 4Rinse glass container with water. 5Dry in an oven (100 to 150 C) for at least one hour. 6Drain any gasoline from the bomb. 7Rinse bomb and lid with gum solvent. 8Dry bomb and lid with a clean dry cloth. 9Before starting procedure, remove glass sample container from oven and allow to cool to room temperature. The control version can be found on the Meraux Refinery intranet. Completed Date:Prepared By:Approved By: Test Procedure 1Fill water bath and leave about 1” headspace in bath. 2Turn on power, and switch heating to mid or high. 3Allow bath temperature to achieve 212 F and reduce heating to low. 4Pour 50 ml of gasoline sample into glass sample container. 5Put glass container into bomb. 6Cover glass container with glass cover. 7Put new rubber gasket on bomb lid. 8Screw lid on bomb and tighten lid. 9Turn oxygen cylinder on (100 psi). 10Wind up chart recorder with key. 11Place new recorder chart on recorder. 12Attach oxygen hose to lid of bomb. 13Turn on oxygen to bomb and allow the bomb to pressurize. 14Turn off oxygen to bomb and vent off oxygen from bomb. 15Repeat the last two steps once more. 16Pressurize the bomb and close flow to bomb. 17Turn off oxygen to bomb and disconnect hose from bomb. 18Allow the bomb to sit out for 10 minutes to see if there are any pressure leaks by observing the chart recorder. 19Repair any leaks and start again at step Put bomb in water bath for overnight. 21After overnight in bath, remove bomb out of bath and allow to cool down. 22Observe the chart and look for the break point. 23Count the number of hours on the chart from the time the bomb goes into the bath until the break point.

If no break point, record number of hours with a plus sign. 26Break apart bomb and take out old gasoline sample.
