NOTE: Handle sample vials with forceps at all times to minimize weighing errors. 3Transfer 0.15 ±0.05 g (2 or 3 drops) of the sample into the vial and allow to cool. 4Reweigh and record vial + sample weight to nearest 0.1 mg. 5Place sample vials into vial holder noting position of each sample with respect to the index mark on holder. 6Place vial holder in oven chamber of MCR tester. 7Press the Red Power Button. It will light up. 8Turn the Nitrogen valve on, adjusting co that the gauge on the MCR tester reads about 20 psi. 9Press the PROG/LOCAL/RESET button. Wait for the Run Light to go off (about 5 to 10 seconds). 10Press the PROG/LOCAL/RESET button again. Wait for the HOLD and REM lights to come on. 11 Press in the PROG STATUS/SHIFT button and the DISPLAY/RUN button at the same time. The Run Light should come on, and the REM light should remain on. 12 Press and hold the NITROGEN ON button until you hear a click. The Run light should remain on, and lights for EVENTS 3 & 4 should come on. EquipmentMaterials and Reagents

The program is finished when the EVENT 4 light flashes continually. 14 Take the lid off the oven chamber and lift the vial holder out with a pair of tongs. Place vial holder on the grill to the right of the oven until cool (about 10 minutes). 15Reweigh the sample vials to nearest 0.1 mg and record weight. 16 Calculate result as follows: a.Subtract weight of empty sample vial from weight of sample plus vial to obtain weight of sample. b.Subtract weight of empty vial from weight of residue plus vial to obtain weight of residue. c.Calculate percent carbon residue: % carbon residue = (weight of residue / weight of sample) X 100. 17Report the mass % carbon residue to the nearest 0.1 % in Labworks.
