Ancient Egyptian Art Unit Instructor: Angela Champion

Problem You are to create a functional vessel out of clay using your choice of ceramic hand building processes. This vessel should include a visual reference to the beliefs, customs, art, and/or architecture of Ancient Egypt. You should defend your choices in your ERQ.

Research  What was the main theme running through the art of Ancient Egypt? What examples shows this?  What customs did the Ancient Egyptians have that show this theme? What evidence can you find shows this?  What are some monumental structures that were created that follows the theme? What examples can you find does this?  What “rules” for creating art did they follow? What example can you find does this?

Research What was their writing called and how was it incorporated into their artwork? What is ceramic hand building? What are 3 ways that you can use the above techniques? How do you join clay together? How do you finish the surface of clay in the greenware stage before glazing? What are the rules for glazing? Product B Feature 1 Feature 2 Feature 3

Generate Ideas From your research what main forms have you found? How were they made? Sketch out 3 possiblities.

Test/Final Solution Using the ceramic hand building process test out various techniques such as soft slab, leather hard slab, coil, sculpting, and pinch. Follow correct procedures for your choices of glazes.

Evaluation How did the form you created relate to the problem? How well did it solve the problem? Did you follow the design process? Share out/Present Rubric/ERQ
