Pottery 1 • Pottery 1 is open to Juniors and Seniors. • Students must have had either Introduction to Art or Multi-Media Design as a pre-requisite. • Both functional and sculptural ceramic art forms are explored. • A materials fee is required. Exposures & Assignments include:

2 The first assignment is a Matched Set of Pinch Pots.
Pinch Pot Building The first assignment is a Matched Set of Pinch Pots.

3 This offers a wide range of possibilities.
When glazing is introduced, students are required to finish their Pinch Pots differently. This offers a wide range of possibilities.

4 It is an expectation that students share successful results.
As part of the course requirement, records are kept of both the building and glazing processes. It is an expectation that students share successful results.

5 Slab Building This hand building method requires working with leather hard sheets of clay.

6 Coil Building Working with “ropes of clay”
students create either a clay vessel, or coil head.

7 Wheel Throwing Forming Clay on a Potter’s Wheel

8 Modeling Three to four modeled “Pinch Heads” are required. They can be free standing or integrated into another project.

9 Clay Object Choosing clay building methods, students design and create a non-functional sculpture resembling an item not normally made of clay. Yes, that is a clay shoe!

10 Teapot In this assignment the student has the option of creating either a functional, sculptural or narrative ceramic piece that incorporates a lid, handle and a spout.

11 Upon successful completion of Pottery 1 the student may elect to take Advanced Pottery.
