Team Teaching Section 3: Collaborative Teaching

Collaborative Teaching Definition In Collaborative Teaching, team teachers work together to teach the material not by the usual monologue, but by exchanging and discussing ideas and theories in front of the learners. Section 3: Collaborative Teaching

Collaborative Teaching Example A nursing class is studying ethical and legal issues about death and dying. In a debate in front of the class, one teacher argues in favor of physician-assisted suicide. The other teacher argues that life should be preserved at all costs. The students then write a position paper outlining their positions on the topic and their legal responsibilities under the current law. Section 3: Collaborative Teaching

Activity With your teaching partner, brainstorm instructional activities specifically linked to the subject or program you plan to teach where you could use Collaborative Teaching. Discuss times and situations where you have used Collaborative Teaching in the classroom. Section 3: Collaborative Teaching

Activity Look at the focus questions. (link) Then watch the video (Link to video) and note the characteristics of the Collaborative Teaching model. What did you see that indicated this was an example of the Collaborative Teaching model? Answer the focus questions together. Section 3: Collaborative Teaching

Activity As a team, create a brief lesson activity using the Collaborative Teaching model that you could use in your program. Discuss how to assess the impact of the Collaborative Teaching model on students. Section 3: Collaborative Teaching

Activity What preparation will you and your partner teacher need to do to implement the Collaborative Teaching model in your sample lesson? Section 3: Collaborative Teaching

Activity – review and reflect Discuss the advantages, opportunities and challenges of using the Collaborative Teaching model in I-BEST. Reflecting on your integrated outcomes and subject, when would this model be most useful, helpful, productive? Section 3: Collaborative Teaching

Follow-up Activities To discuss with others who are taking this course, to share your lesson activities, or to collaborate with teachers who do what you do, go to: (online forum) Do you have a video of you and your partner using Collaborative Teaching in your classroom? Post it here: (YouTube site?) Section 3: Collaborative Teaching
