Why Learn?

When Will I Find The Time?

Free Apps! ALL of the apps that I have used are FREE. When looking in the app store, you can even choose a price range. By marking free, you won’t have to look at everything you cannot have. Simply download apps to check them out. If you do not like the app, then delete it. If you want the app back, it will be saved in the “purchased” section of the app store.

Apps On the next few slides, I will list several top app choices for both teachers and students. These apps have been the favorites during my own personal experience. EVERY APP LISTED IS FREE! Please me if you would like a copy of this slide show.

Teacher Picks SCRIBBLE PRESS

Teacher Picks Language Arts: Scribble Press Parent’s Choice Award Readers Choice Award 2011 for Homeschooling Students create their own stories, which can be published and viewed by other students. We have also used this app for student-created study guides, especially to help students visualize and apply vocabulary words. Visit to view more and manage a class account online.

Teacher Picks Spelling City

Teacher Picks Language Arts Spelling City “A fun way to learn spelling and vocabulary words by playing engaging learning games using any word list.” (Spelling City, APP Store Description) Teachers can use this app to create word lists, especially spelling words. Word lists can be managed online at You do not have to do ALL of the work. For most words, you can either enter your own definition or choose from existing definitions.

Teacher Picks Speedo Math Math Bingo

Teacher Picks Google Earth

Teacher Picks Social Studies Google Earth Explore the Earth, starting from a planetary view. Students can not only look up and view any location from a birds-eye view, but students can also tap different locations to learn more about each country.

Teacher Picks TOOLS Encyclopedia Britannica Merriam Webster Dictionary Brain POP Jumbo/Fraction Calculator Educreations Math Terms Glossary Protractor

Teacher Picks Tools: Encyclopedia/Dictionary: Look up words or subjects; Encyclopedia includes pictures; Dictionary includes sound clips BrainPop: Use school or personal account to view videos on multiple subjects. Fraction Calculator/Protractor: Compute with fractions or work with angles (similar to physical tools). Educreations: Students can use a white board to work out problems or answer questions (includes great features for creating and labeling a diagram). Math Terms Glossary: Look up any math concept. Often includes diagrams in explanations.

Student Picks Language Arts Sparkle Fish An audio story game where students verbally supply missing parts of speech. After completion, students can listen to the final and often hilarious story.

Student Picks Language Arts Sock Puppets Sock Puppets allows students to create their own lip-synched videos using silly sock creatures. This is a fun way to have students work in groups on a story or even on an oral report.

Student Picks Language Arts Toontastic Students use ready-made cartoon characters and backdrops to create stories. Students play the ultimate director as they pick characters, settings, props, manage character movements, and record or create character dialogue.

Student Picks Language Arts Word Warp X A puzzle game where students must beat the clock to find words using a set of letters. Students enjoy competing with the two- player option.

Student Picks Math Sushi Monster Students can practice addition and subtraction math facts in a game format.

Student Picks Math Geoboard Students can explore shapes using digital rubberbands.

Student Picks Math Pool and Mini Golf 3D Students can learn about angles by playing pool, which gives students a real life application for a function of angles. Students can also learn about angles by playing 3D golf. Both games show students the angles they will use to get a ball into a target.

Student Picks Science Tinker Box, Laser Logic, and Aerox Students love to play puzzles based on scientific physics.

Student Picks Social Studies/Science National Geographic Students love to explore several free apps by national geographic, learning strange new things about their world.

Incentive Finally, IPADs are great for reward systems. Students can earn IPAD time for meeting different goals. Most classes give students 10 minutes at the end if all assigned goals are met, whether the goal is completing an assignment, improving a grade, having a positive attitude, raising one’s hand to speak, etc. Letting students help choose games (based on school approval) ensures a desire to meet set goals.

Accommodations Lab Supporting Students; Enhancing Learning

Supporting Students Makeup Work Large Projects (Science Fairs/Papers) Oral Administration Typing Assignments vs. Writing Extended time Small Group Rewards (Free Time) Review/Tutoring Recording/Audiotape

Enhancing Learning iPads and HP mini Notepads Research to gain prior knowledge Repetition and reinforcement Real-world application and exploration Alternating assignments Classes can work on two assignments at once. Hands-on Students work on interactive activities once finished with a class assignment. They do not have to be a distraction as they wait for others to finish.

Final Thoughts… An extra set of helping hands is always available to students and teachers… Gives teachers the ability to be in two places at once… No wait as a teacher tries to play “catch-up” with a group that has been absent or needs more instruction… Instead, send make-up work to the lab, reward students for completed work, or separate a class into two groups and cut down the teacher-student ratio…

Pros, Pros, Pros… By creating an accommodating space that is available to ALL, an entire school profits from this multi-purpose classroom.
