Welcome to the Island! Study Island Student Demo: Educator guide Welcome to Study Island! Whether you are new to the Island or have students that are, we hope this student demo Power Point will make a great introduction to the program! Set Up: Assemble students in the lab or in a classroom setting where you can project the Power Point onto a screen or TV. They do not need to be at personal computers, as this is merely a way to introduce the program. Class time needed: minutes or one class period. Student Information

Activate any prior knowledge about Study Island by asking the students to predict what Study Island is and share experiences they have had with the program. 2. 4 Fast Facts Every student will get their own username and password!
You can earn Blue Ribbon Awards for doing well in each topic you study! Study Island has fun games to play while studying including Swat Game, Basketball, and many others! Instructional Set: This screen allows you to tell students some of the highlights of the program. Click through to view and discuss each fast fact. 2. How do I log in? 1. Go to 2. Enter your username and password Our school’s usernames and passwords are modeled after this format: USERNAME: <Insert sample user name here> PASSWORD: <Insert sample password here> 3. Discuss your school’s login format. (Before the instructional session, feel free to add your school’s personalized user name format and passwords.) Use the hyperlink web address to model logging in. If you click on the web address, it will take you to our website. 5. Once at the website, go through the login process with a student example or with your teacher login. 7 This is what a Grade Level Screen looks like:
The slide above is a great slide to pause on and discuss the links listed on the left side of the screen. Below is a brief summary of the functions of these links: Message Center- If you school administrator allows it, students can send messages to each other or teachers. My Attributes- This is a link that allows students to change passwords, usernames and personal account information. This is also a link that can have restrictions on it from the school administrator. My High Scores- Students can earn spots on the High Score table when playing games on Study Island. This link allows them to view those high scores. My Class- (Optional) This link is only enabled when teachers have set up a Class Page. Continued… Click on a subject to begin studying!

8 When you click on a subject, you will go a page like this:
To select a topic, you can check the box next to it by clicking it. Then click START Studying! This slide will show students the different features of the topic screen. Some additional features of this screen that you may want to talk about are: The tabs at the top of the screen which allow you to switch subjects. The column where students can see stats if they have taken the topic before. The instruction reminder at the top left corner. Continued… There are lessons to review with too!

9 This is what a Class Page Screen looks like:
To study your assignment, click on the title! 5. Explain to students that the Class Page screen will be seen only if their teachers have set up classes and assignments for them. Show students the Results area (in red) where they are able to see if they have completed the assignment. Also discuss the envelope icon at the top next to the teacher’s login where students can message questions to their teacher. Continued… Your teacher may have a Class Page set up for you. If so, your assignments will be showing when you first log in.

10 Before you study, you get to decide how you want to test!
Click abox to choose test or game mode! Choose the number of questions to be in your test! Go over the features of the Session Options screen. Some important notes are listed below: The number of questions needed to earn a blue ribbon will be the default number that is set in the dropdown box. In order to earn a blue ribbon, students must take at least as many questions as the default. When selecting the printable worksheet, students will not have an answer key. If a teacher prints under her login, there will be an answer key. Continued… Click next to start your session!

11 Test your skills in Test Mode!
Select an answer by clicking on the letter Once you have selected the correct answer, you can get an explanation of the question or go to the next question! 9. This slide illustrates what happens when a student gets an answer correct. If a student gets a question incorrect, the student is able to continue to try to answer the question until he or she reaches the correct answer. If the system detects that a student is randomly guessing at questions, a pop up window will appear, forcing him or her to wait 10 seconds before answering again. Continued…

Build interest in Study Island by showing students several of the options they have in the program. This slide shows some of our most popular games. Game mode sessions are recorded and added to the cumulative score for a topic. Though performance on questions in game mode will affect students scores, it is important to remember that the game mode content is pulled from the same bank that test mode content is pulled from. Remind students that the better they do on the questions in game mode, the more blue ribbons they will earn. continued… These are just a few…try them all!

13 All Study Island topics have a passing goal for you to reach!
So, how do I earn Blue Ribbons? All Study Island topics have a passing goal for you to reach! The passing goal is made up of two things: the number of questions you have to take and a score percentage. For this topic, Place Value, 20 is the number of questions you must take, 75% is what you need to pass! Blue Ribbons are a great way to build motivation for students! By teaching students how they are scored, students take ownership of their own success. 12. Talk to students about how the Blue Ribbons are based off of all of the scores they accumulate. If a student gets a great score the first time they take a session and earns a Blue Ribbon, the student can lose the ribbon by doing poorly the next time they study. Blue Ribbons are based on the cumulative score for a topic. continued… You earn Blue Ribbons by reaching the passing goal for each topic.

14 Remember to work carefully!
Each test and game you do in Study Island is recorded so your teacher can see how you are doing! 13. This slide is designed to caution students to do their best. Encourage the students to earn as many Blue Ribbons as they can. (You might even consider having an incentive program to motivate students.) continued…

15 Click on the report links on the left side of your screen!
I want to see how many blue ribbons I have, how can I check? 14. Student report links are a great way to get the parents involved in the progress of your students as well as help students assess how they are doing in the program. continued…

Conclusion: Sum up your Study Island presentation by telling students what other kids have thought of the program. This is also a great time to tell the students about any incentive programs you will be doing or any additional expectations for the program specifically for your school. continued… “I love this! If Study Island is new to students, this is a great time to have the students practice logging in. You could dismiss the students to personal computers if you are in a lab setting. While students practice logging in and exploring the program, you can again model the process by clicking on the Study Island hyperlink ( on this slide.
