Collection Development with Apps: Using iPads/iTouches in the classroom for educational purposes involves purchasing apps to match curricular needs. The apps can extend a lesson, support instruction, help students practice a particular skill set, or create ways for students to learn

Background of iPod/iPad technology at Metcalf Current set of 24 iTouches and 12 iPads that circulates from the library 15 iTouches purchased with technology dollars, 10 with PTO money iPads have all been purchased by the Tech Department Started the pilot program November of 2010 with 15 iTouches The tech coordinator presented them at a faculty meeting

All devices are in cases

Scheduling is done with an online calendar

Experience so far/Responsibilities Checked out each week since their introduction My responsibilities: – Downloading apps – Syncing – Charging – Troubleshooting 1 Syncing station – mini mac in the library PTO Purchased 2 gift cards for app purchases Give each iTouch/iPad a different name and they will sync & charge simultaneously iPad users group – focus on how it makes us better teachers and how it impacts student learning

Supporting the Curriculum What is an “information resource?” What makes a good “information resource?” What are the most effective ways we can support the curriculum? How do you find out what you should purchase to support your curriculum?

Upon arriving at work one morning, you see a history teacher has signed up to use the library one week from today. You contact him to find out more about their visit. What questions do you need to ask to ensure you have the resources the students need to do their work? Post your ides in the chat! While We’re Waiting….

What other types of resources might we purchase?

In-class activity With your assigned partner, share some good/bad resources you found in your library on your curriculum topic Discuss what you’d look for in a resource on this topic – what’s important to you? Make a list you agree on and it to me at the end of class. Do some quick searches in Amazon, B&N, Google, etc. to see what’s available & discuss what you find.

Coming Up Don’t forget: me your list of selection criteria for your topic. Send one with both names For Week 8 (March 8 th ), bring to class a potential list of resources you might consider buying on your topic. Assignment 1 Due March 8 th
